New York will ban gas stoves and heating systems in new construction of buildings seven stories or less, starting in 2026, as part of a law included in the state budget. The legislation aims to reduce emissions from buildings and gives New York a head start in the race among several states looking to pass similar bans. The law includes exemptions for fossil-fuel powered backup generators, laboratories, car washes, and commercial food establishments. The ban will be extended to buildings larger than seven stories in 2029. Existing gas stoves and heating systems will be grandfathered in under the new law.

Germany plans to ban the installation of most oil and gas heating systems from next year, with proposals approved on Wednesday triggering angry divisions in the cabinet. The radical plans are designed to transform Germany’s heating systems in an attempt to meet net zero emission targets. The bill is due to come to parliament in June and will enact a virtual ban on the installation of gas and oil heating from 2024. Homeowners will be encouraged to install heat pumps to run on renewable sources of electricity, or to switch to district heating, electric or solar thermal systems.

The German government has voted to ban most oil and gas heating boilers in new and old buildings from 2024, with exemptions for certain households. The ruling coalition has decided that nearly all new heating systems should run on 65% renewable energy. However, industry associations and the German public disagree with the planned ban, citing concerns over rising heating prices and the financial challenge of ditching oil and gas boilers too soon. The switch to renewables for heating could cost Germans around $10 billion every year until 2028.

The German cabinet has approved a bill that will ban most new oil and gas heating systems from 2024, with the aim of cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The policy has met resistance from critics who warn it could be costly for poorer households. The shift could cost Germans around €9.16bn ($10bn) annually until 2028, according to the draft bill. The government will offer a subsidy of up to 50% for replacement heating systems, with the money coming from the Climate and Transformation Fund. The bill gives some exemptions, for instance for homeowners who are over 80 years old and living in hardship.
