Open Society Foundations Complete Restructuring, Commit $400M to Green Jobs

Open Society Foundations, led by George Soros, announced a $400 million commitment over eight years to support green economic development in six middle-income countries. This marks the first major initiative following a significant internal reorganization. The funding aims to create sustainable jobs and shift towards clean energy, addressing issues like pollution, green infrastructure, and workforce upskilling. The restructuring, driven by Alex Soros, included layoffs and strategic changes to better align with global challenges like climate change and authoritarianism.

"Biden's Climate Corps: Training 20,000 Young People for Green Jobs"

President Joe Biden has launched the American Climate Corps program, aiming to train 20,000 young people for climate-focused jobs in clean energy, land restoration, and forest management. The program seeks to provide skills-based training and serve as a pipeline for participants to secure green jobs. This executive action follows Biden's previous proposal for a $30 billion Civilian Climate Corps, which was not included in the Inflation Reduction Act. The launch comes after 51 congress members urged Biden to revive the Civilian Climate Corps through an executive order.

"Biden's Philadelphia Visit: Green Jobs, Labor Support, and Economic Agenda"

President Biden visited the Philly Shipyard to court organized labor and promote green jobs, emphasizing that unions will play a crucial role in building America's renewable energy future. However, tensions are rising between unions and companies as the economy evolves, with concerns about AI, clean energy, and e-commerce impacting traditional work. Major unions, including the Writers Guild, Screen Actors Guild, United Auto Workers, and Teamsters, are considering strikes over issues such as streaming revenues, job protections in new industries, and fair pay. While Biden supports collective bargaining, a series of strikes could harm the economy and his reelection chances. The president is focused on expanding unionization into new industries and attracting younger workers to the labor movement. Unions played a significant role in Biden's election victory, but he also aims to compete in sunbelt states where investments in new industries are being made. The AFL-CIO believes that Biden's investments in manufacturing, infrastructure, and clean energy will lead to more union jobs.

"Green Jobs Surge: Over One-Third of U.S. Energy Workers Embrace Clean Energy"

Nearly 40% of U.S. energy workers, totaling over 3.1 million employees, were engaged in jobs aligned with the country's climate goals in 2021. Solar, wind, and electric vehicle industries accounted for half of the new hires, while coal-fired power plants saw a decline in employment. The U.S. energy industry added nearly 300,000 new jobs, with around 114,000 in clean energy technologies. Fossil fuels also saw an increase in employment, particularly in mining and drilling. The report suggests that the green workforce may be underestimated, and clean-energy jobs would be higher if states used the federal government's definition. The growth in green jobs is attributed to President Biden's infrastructure-spending laws.

"Future Job Market: High Demand, High Pay, and Rapid Change"

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has identified the 10 fastest-growing jobs over the next five years, with AI and machine learning specialists, sustainability specialists, and business intelligence analysts among the roles expected to soar in demand. The rise of generative AI and other smart technologies, as well as the drive to "go green," will lead to some jobs becoming obsolete. The WEF report echoes earlier findings from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which also identified jobs in data and renewable energy as some of the fastest-growing occupations in the US over the next decade.

$700 Million Climate Campus Planned for Governors Island.

New York City plans to build a $700 million campus on Governors Island, led by Stony Brook University, dedicated to finding solutions to address the climate crisis. The 400,000-square-foot hub, called the "New York Climate Exchange," will focus on researching climate solutions and training for green jobs. The campus will serve as a "living laboratory" that features resilient design and will create more than 2,200 jobs. The project follows a similar approach to the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island, but city officials refer to the Governors Island campus as "Cornell Tech on steroids."

Debt ceiling proposal sparks political tension in Washington.

The White House has warned that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's debt ceiling plan to cut $4.5tn in spending would put over 100,000 green manufacturing jobs at risk, many of which are in Republican congressional districts. The Republican bill would rescind parts of the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes eliminating green tax credits for companies that build electric vehicles, charging stations, solar and wind facilities, EV batteries and other infrastructure for renewable energy. Clean energy companies have announced 101,036 new jobs in 31 states since President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act in August.
