Stony Brook University to Lead $700 Million Climate Center on Governors Island.

Stony Brook University has been selected as the anchor institution for the development of a world-leading climate solutions center on Governors Island in New York City. The New York Climate Exchange will be a first-of-its-kind international center for developing and deploying dynamic solutions to the global climate crisis, while also acting as a hub for New Yorkers to benefit from the rapidly evolving green economy. The Simons Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies have pledged a total of $150m in combined support for the project. The Exchange will host green job training and skills-building programs for local residents to help them launch successful careers.

Governors Island to Host Revolutionary Climate Center

Stony Brook University will lead the New York Climate Exchange, a 400,000-square-foot climate change research and education hub on Governors Island, set to open in 2028. The hub will host academics working on climate projects, students of all ages for educational programs and workforce training, and an incubator program for up to 30 businesses each year. The project will transform a southern chunk of the island and is expected to usher in more frequent ferry service along with new open space for the public. The center will cost about $700 million, with $150 million committed from the city and Trust, $50 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies, plus $100 million from the Simons Foundation.

$700 Million Climate Campus Planned for Governors Island.

New York City plans to build a $700 million campus on Governors Island, led by Stony Brook University, dedicated to finding solutions to address the climate crisis. The 400,000-square-foot hub, called the "New York Climate Exchange," will focus on researching climate solutions and training for green jobs. The campus will serve as a "living laboratory" that features resilient design and will create more than 2,200 jobs. The project follows a similar approach to the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island, but city officials refer to the Governors Island campus as "Cornell Tech on steroids."
