Dr. Joseph Dituri, a biomedical engineer and associate professor at the University of South Florida, has broken the Guinness World Record for living underwater for 100 days. The research project, Project Neptune 100, focused on ocean conservation research and studying how compression affects the human body. Dituri hopes his underwater research will benefit the treatment of a variety of illnesses, including traumatic brain injuries. He also used the project as an educational experience for youth and continued teaching his college students virtually while underwater.

Dr. Joseph Dituri, a biomedical engineering professor, has broken the world record for living underwater without depressurization by spending 100 days at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida. The project aimed to learn more about how the human body and mind respond to extended exposure to extreme pressure and an isolated environment and was designed to benefit ocean researchers and astronauts on future long-term missions. Dituri conducted daily experiments and measurements to monitor how his body responded to the increase in pressure over time and interacted with almost 5,000 students from 12 countries.

Dr. Joseph Dituri, a university professor and diving explorer, has set a new record for the longest time living underwater without depressurization, spending 100 days at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Florida. The project aimed to learn more about how the human body and mind respond to extended exposure to extreme pressure and an isolated environment and was designed to benefit ocean researchers and astronauts on future long-term missions. Dituri conducted daily experiments and measurements to monitor how his body responded to the increase in pressure over time and plans to present findings from Project Neptune 100 at November’s World Extreme Medicine Conference in Scotland.

Biomedical engineering professor Joseph Dituri broke the world record for the most days a human has lived underwater, spending 100 days in a special habitat 25 feet below the surface to study how the human body responds to long-term exposure to extreme pressure and whether living in hyperbaric pressure can slow the aging process. Dituri shrank in height by half an inch, got 60-66% REM sleep compared to 40% prior, saw his cholesterol drop by 72 points, and his inflammation go down by 30%. He documented his day-to-day life underwater on Instagram and will present his findings at the World Extreme Medical Conference in November.

USF professor Joseph Dituri has broken the world record for the longest time living underwater, spending 100 days in a 100-square-foot lab at Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo. During his mission, Dituri researched how the body and mind react to being in an isolated, confined, and extreme environment for a long period of time. He plans to share his findings and research at the World Extreme Medical Conference in November.

Joseph Dituri, a university professor, broke the record for the longest time living underwater without depressurization at Jules' Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida, on his 74th day of a planned 100-day mission. The previous record of 73 days, two hours and 34 minutes was set by two Tennessee professors at the same location in 2014. Dituri's underwater mission, dubbed Project Neptune 100, combines medical and ocean research along with educational outreach and was organized by the Marine Resources Development Foundation. His research includes daily experiments in physiology to monitor how the human body responds to long-term exposure to extreme pressure.
