Rare Outburst: Tonight's Mysterious Meteor Shower to Illuminate Skies

A rare meteor shower known as the December phi Cassiopeiids (DPC) #446 could light up the night skies with up to 200 shooting stars per hour. The shower is related to the long lost comet 3D/Biela and last surprised skywatchers in 2011. Earth passing through a dense cloud of debris could cause an outburst or meteor storm, with the peak predicted to favor Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia.

Apocalyptic 'Devil Comet' Unleashes Record-Breaking Explosions on Collision Course with Earth

The "Devil Comet," officially known as 12P/Pons-Brooks, erupted for the fourth time as it races towards Earth. The comet, which is roughly three times the size of Mount Everest, violently released ice and gas, creating a glowing halo resembling devil horns. Amateur astronomer Eliot Herman spotted the major outburst, witnessing a 100-fold increase in brightness. The comet's cryovolcanic nature allows for explosive outbursts, with the ejected material forming a halo-like coma and creating its distinctive horn-like appearance. The Devil Comet will make a close approach to the sun on April 24, 2024, and its closest distance to Earth on June 2, 2024.

"Apocalyptic 'Devil Comet' Unleashes Massive Eruption on Collision Course with Earth"

The "Devil Comet," officially known as 12P/Pons-Brooks, erupted for the fourth time as it approaches Earth. The icy volcanic comet, roughly three times the size of Mount Everest, violently released ice and gas, creating a glowing halo resembling devil horns. Amateur astronomer Eliot Herman spotted the major outburst, witnessing a 100-fold increase in brightness. The comet's cryovolcanic nature allows for explosive sublimation, resulting in powerful outbursts and the formation of a halo-like coma. The Devil Comet will make its closest approach to Earth on June 2, 2024, providing a unique opportunity for observation.

"Comet Pons-Brooks: A Celestial Spectacle Worth Observing!"

Comet Pons-Brooks, a periodic comet that orbits the sun every 71 years, recently had an outburst, rapidly brightening and taking on a peculiar shape. Although it is currently only visible with large telescopes, it could reach binocular range by March. The comet will share the sky with a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, but observing it during the eclipse requires caution and experience. As the comet gets closer to the sun, it will speed up and brighten, passing through various constellations. Its closest approach to the sun will be on April 21, 2024, and it will be closest to Earth on June 2, 2024.

Black hole activity in the Milky Way: Echoes and awakenings.

Scientists have detected echoes of light that may be associated with an outburst from the supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, at the center of the Milky Way that took place about 200 years ago. The researchers used the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and the Chandra X-ray Observatory to distinguish reflected light from other sources. The resulting data suggests that a low-luminosity event could potentially produce these light echoes given one to two years, and if the inflowing material was close to the maximum amount, then Sgr A* could have output enough energy in just a few hours.

Newly Discovered Secondary Supermassive Black Holes Challenge Astrophysics Theories

Astronomers have detected a burst of light from the smaller of two supermassive black holes within the blazar OJ 287, marking the first time the smaller black hole's direct emissions have been observed. The smaller black hole orbits the larger one every 12 years, passing through its accretion disk twice in that period, releasing bursts of light that last about a fortnight. The system is one of the few cases where there are good prospects for detecting gravitational waves from their mutual orbits.

Don't Miss the Spectacular Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower Peak This Weekend!

The annual Eta Aquariid meteor shower, linked to Halley's Comet, will peak tonight and tomorrow, with up to 160 meteors per hour expected due to Earth passing through a dense trail of debris left by the comet. The shower will be visible from both hemispheres, with the southern hemisphere getting the better show. NASA recommends viewers give themselves 30 minutes in the dark without a light source to properly see the shooting stars.
