Decoding Black Holes Through Light Echoes

Scientists from Princeton University and Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a method to measure black hole masses and spins by analyzing light echoes, which are delayed light bursts that travel around black holes due to gravitational lensing. This technique, involving telescopes on Earth and in space, could enhance our understanding of black holes and galaxy evolution, while also testing Einstein's theory of general relativity. The research was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Echoes of Light Reveal Secrets of Black Holes

Astrophysicists have developed a new technique to detect light echoes around black holes, which could help measure their mass and spin more accurately. This method, detailed in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, leverages gravitational lensing to observe photons circling black holes, providing a novel way to study these cosmic phenomena. The technique could also enhance our understanding of black holes' roles in galaxy evolution and test Einstein's theories of gravity.

Black hole activity in the Milky Way: Echoes and awakenings.

Scientists have detected echoes of light that may be associated with an outburst from the supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, at the center of the Milky Way that took place about 200 years ago. The researchers used the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and the Chandra X-ray Observatory to distinguish reflected light from other sources. The resulting data suggests that a low-luminosity event could potentially produce these light echoes given one to two years, and if the inflowing material was close to the maximum amount, then Sgr A* could have output enough energy in just a few hours.
