China's Shenzhou-21 Mission Advances Space Station and Lunar Goals

China launched its tenth crewed mission to the Tiangong space station, Shenzhou-21, with a crew of three taikonauts who will conduct 27 experiments, including China's first study of rodents in orbit, during a six-month stay. The mission was launched from Jiuquan using the CZ-2F/G rocket, and the crew will quickly dock with the station, taking a record three and a half hours to reach it, to relieve the previous crew after their extensive scientific work.

NASA and Boeing Proceed with Starliner Launch Despite Thruster Leak

NASA and Boeing have scheduled June 1 for the first crewed launch of the Starliner CST-100 despite a helium leak in a thruster. The leak, caused by a seal in a flange, is considered isolated, and officials are confident in managing it. A new de-orbit procedure has been developed to address potential thruster failures. The mission's readiness will be reviewed before the launch date.

"50th Anniversary: The Historic Return of Skylab's All-Rookie Final Crew"

The final crew of Skylab, consisting of Jerry Carr, Ed Gibson, and Bill Pogue, returned to Earth 50 years ago after an 84-day mission, setting a record for the longest single spaceflight for an American crewed vehicle until 2021. The mission was notable for being the largest all-rookie crew launched by NASA and for the strained relationship between the crew and ground control. Despite hopes of revisiting Skylab with the Space Shuttle, it was deemed impractical, and the crew's return was not covered live by major US television networks.

NASA's Commercial Crew Program Advances Toward Boeing Crew Flight Test to International Space Station

NASA and Boeing are working towards completing verification and validation activities for the Boeing Starliner spacecraft's first crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The launch, initially targeted for March, has been rescheduled for April to better accommodate upcoming crew rotations and cargo resupply missions. Boeing is currently addressing hardware remediation efforts and plans to deliver and install parachutes by the end of the year. Modifications to the thermal control system valves are also being planned. The certification process is nearly complete, and astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are training for the mission.

"International Space Station Welcomes New Crew on Soyuz Mission"

A Soyuz spacecraft successfully delivered two Roscosmos cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) on September 15. This mission was originally scheduled for March but was delayed due to a coolant leak in the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft. NASA and Roscosmos have concluded that the leak was caused by external debris or a micrometeoroid impact. The Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft, which will return three astronauts to Earth on September 27, remains in good condition on the ISS. NASA has also announced the assignment of Tracy C. Dyson to a future Soyuz mission in March 2024, and discussions are underway for extending the "integrated crew" arrangements between NASA and Roscosmos.

Axiom Space Secures NASA's 4th Crewed Flight to ISS in 2024

NASA has awarded Axiom Space its fourth crewed flight to the International Space Station (ISS), scheduled for no earlier than August 2024. Axiom will pay for NASA services and supplies, with the mission expected to last 14 days. The crew, which includes three private astronauts and an Axiom employee, is yet to be named. Axiom Space is also involved in designing the next Extravehicular Activity suit for the Moon and building Space Station modules.

Artemis II: NASA's Moon Mission Prep and Simulation at Naval Base San Diego

NASA has begun simulations for the Artemis II mission, the first crewed mission of the Artemis program, focusing on propellant loading and the terminal countdown. These simulations are crucial for troubleshooting potential issues and ensuring crew safety. The training team within the Exploration Ground Systems Program throws various scenarios at the launch team to prepare them for different situations. The simulations also help update the launch control system and inform the timing of operations. The Artemis II crew did not participate in the recent simulation, but teams across NASA centers are preparing for integrated simulations closer to launch. These simulations are essential for future Artemis missions and NASA's goal of establishing a long-term presence on the Moon.

SpaceX's Starliner and Private Astronauts' Earth Views: Latest Updates.

SpaceX successfully completed its tenth crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS) while Boeing delayed its first crewed flight of Starliner indefinitely due to parachute and wire harness tape problems. The delay raises questions about Boeing's work on Starliner and NASA's oversight of it. NASA is committed to Starliner and having a second crew transportation system, but the delay highlights the need for redundancy in case something happens to Crew Dragon. SpaceX is preparing for its 11th Crew Dragon launch, currently scheduled for mid-August.

Boeing and Dream Chaser face delays in crewed space missions.

Boeing's Starliner capsule's first crewed mission, Crew Flight Test (CFT), has been delayed to May at the earliest, following the Axiom Mission 2. The mission will carry two astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS). If successful, NASA will certify Starliner for regular astronaut missions, making it another private crewed spacecraft in the American fleet.
