"Museveni Criticizes the West and Assumes Leadership of NAM"

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni criticized the West for imposing ideologies and oppression on the third world while addressing the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Kampala after taking over the chairmanship of the 120-country grouping. He emphasized the need for unity, solidarity, and collective coordination among member states to exercise considerable influence, particularly at the UN, and called for respect for the freedom of others. Museveni's remarks come amid criticism from Western powers for assenting to a homosexuality law and ahead of the United Nations Summit of the Future in September 2024.

"Guinea Junta Leader Rejects Western Democracy Amid Surge of Coups"

Guinea's military leader, Mamady Doumbouya, criticized the Western model of democracy during his address at the U.N. General Assembly, stating that it does not work for Africa, as evidenced by the recent wave of coups in the region. Doumbouya argued that Africa should be allowed to design its own models of governance and called for an end to condescension and racism towards the continent. Western powers, including the U.S. and France, have condemned the coups and urged the restoration of democracy. Doumbouya's government proposed a two-year transition to elections but has made little progress in organizing a vote.

International Powers Issue Warning to Iran Over Nuclear Materials

The United States and three European allies, known as the E3, have threatened Iran with another resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board, demanding action on issues such as explaining uranium traces found at undeclared sites. However, they have not specified when or if they will follow through with the resolution. The warning comes amidst secret U.S.-Iran talks, complicating the West's standoff with Iran. While Western powers have criticized Iran for stonewalling the IAEA and enriching uranium to high levels, the United States has reportedly engaged in secret "de-escalation" talks with Iran. The Western powers issued a non-binding joint statement with 59 other countries, calling on Iran to address the issues, instead of seeking a binding resolution at the IAEA board meeting.

Deadly Jihadi Attack in Niger Raises Western Concerns

Insurgents launched a major attack in Niger, killing 17 soldiers and injuring nearly 24, marking the first significant assault in six months against the country's army. Western powers, concerned about the recent coup by the presidential guard weakening Niger's ability to combat jihadi violence in the Sahel region, have suspended military operations. The attack highlights the security void created by the coup, allowing jihadi groups like the Islamic State and al-Qaida affiliates to assert their presence. Neighboring countries are threatening military action against the coup, while the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, has activated a standby force to restore order. The longer the coup persists, the less likely an intervention becomes, potentially forcing the international community to accept the status quo.

Niger Coup: Prigozhin Accuses West, Soldiers Declare General as Head of State

Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group, has expressed support for the ongoing coup in Niger, accusing Western powers of colonizing African nations and fostering terrorism to maintain control. This comes after Prigozhin's failed coup attempt in Russia and his plans to expand into Africa.

The Battle of Kemalism in Turkish Elections.

The Turkish presidential election on Sunday may produce a clear-cut victory for incumbent President Recep Erdogan, despite the unified opposition candidacy of Kemal Kilicdaroglu. Kilicdaroglu is an old-world "Kemalist" who believes in the core principles of nationalism, secularism, and "statism." Even if Kilicdaroglu wins, western powers shouldn't expect an outright alignment of Turkish foreign policies with western demands. Erdogan has largely followed a foreign policy rooted in the ideology of the Turkish state that Ataturk founded, including in the fetishism over secularism typical of an archetypal Kemalist like Kilicdaroglu.

The Complexities of Sudan's Home-Grown Conflict and External Involvement

The conflict in Sudan between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has drawn support from various foreign players. Egypt backs Burhan, while the UAE supports Dagalo. Saudi Arabia and the United States are leading efforts to secure a ceasefire, while Ethiopia and Kenya hold some sway due to their role in regional diplomacy. Western powers supported a transition towards elections after the overthrow of former leader Omar al-Bashir, but their direct financial support was frozen when Burhan and Dagalo staged a coup in 2021.

The Tragic State of Sudan: A Result of Decades of Neglect and Violence.

The Western understanding of stability and sustainable development in Sudan through the prism of the neocon ideology that permeates the Biden administration lies at the core of the aggravation of the sluggish internal political crisis in Sudan that has been brewing since 2019 between the army led by the de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and armed formations led by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo. The crisis can be resolved only through a “security solution,” which means an integration process involving the Rapid Support Forces in an appropriate manner as a political partner in governance, not just a military force affiliated with the army. Meanwhile, the clumsy, inept handling of the formation of the new government by the UN Representative Volker Perthes significantly contributed to the present crisis.

Ukraine seeks Western support amid tensions with Russia and Poland.

China's ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, has said that Western powers cannot instruct China on what to do about Russia's war in Ukraine. Despite being one of Moscow's top allies, China has positioned itself as a middleman between Russia and Ukraine, putting forward a 12-point peace plan in February. There have been concerns that China might be supplying weapons to Russia, but Zhang denied this. Both French President Emmanuel Macron and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to step up peacemaking efforts, but Xi stuck to Beijing's talking points on the war in Ukraine.

Russia's Growing Support in Developing World Raises Concerns

Russia's influence is growing in the developing world as propaganda and diplomatic efforts gather momentum and Western powers fail to counter the Kremlin's narratives, according to a report from the Economist Intelligence Unit. The report observed a significant uptick in the number of countries now leaning toward Russia, from 29 last year to 35 today. China remains the most significant country in this category, but other developing countries have also moved into this grouping, which accounts for 33% of the world's population.
