Ukraine seeks Western support amid tensions with Russia and Poland.

China's ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, has said that Western powers cannot instruct China on what to do about Russia's war in Ukraine. Despite being one of Moscow's top allies, China has positioned itself as a middleman between Russia and Ukraine, putting forward a 12-point peace plan in February. There have been concerns that China might be supplying weapons to Russia, but Zhang denied this. Both French President Emmanuel Macron and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to step up peacemaking efforts, but Xi stuck to Beijing's talking points on the war in Ukraine.
