SpaceX Achieves Twin Launches and Record Booster Landing in Florida

SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Koreasat-6A telecommunications satellite from Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on November 11, 2024. The launch took place at 12:22 p.m. EST, and spectators in Cape Canaveral witnessed the booster landing at Landing Zone 1. The satellite is intended for Thales Alenia Space, and the event coincided with Veterans Day, although views were partially obscured by cloud cover.

ESA Partners with Thales Alenia and Exploration Co. for Post-ISS Cargo Missions

The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded €25 million contracts to The Exploration Company and Thales Alenia Space to develop a cargo return service from the International Space Station (ISS) before its deorbiting. This initiative aims to enhance Europe's independence in space operations, with the new vehicles expected to return cargo to Earth by 2028.

"Thales Alenia Space Secures Major Contract for ExoMars Mission"

The European Space Agency has awarded a 522 million euro contract to Thales Alenia Space to resume work on the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin mission, which aims to search for evidence of past or present life on Mars. The new contract will replace Russian contributions and involve the development of a new landing platform, with NASA providing aerobraking engines and radioisotope heating units. The mission is now scheduled for launch in the fourth quarter of 2028, marking a major stabilization of the program after being derailed by geopolitical issues.

"International Collaboration Aims to Establish Permanent Lunar Base by 2040"

Thales Alenia Space and the Italian Space Agency are collaborating to develop a Multi-Purpose Habitat (MPH), a critical component of NASA's Artemis program aimed at establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon. The lunar base module, expected to be deployed in the 2030s, will serve as a base for Artemis astronauts to conduct experiments and explore the lunar environment. Thales Alenia Space is also working on pressurized modules for the Lunar Gateway, further demonstrating their commitment to lunar exploration. The next step for the MPH project is the Mission Concept Review in early 2024, focusing on developing technologies for extended lunar stays. While the vision of a fully functional lunar city remains unrealized, the MPH represents a significant step towards realizing the dream of lunar bases.

"Humanity's First Permanent Lunar Base: A Reality on the Horizon?"

Thales Alenia Space and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) are collaborating on the development of the Multi-Purpose Habitat (MPH), a crucial component of NASA's Artemis program that aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon. The MPH could potentially become the first permanent lunar base, with a cylindrical design and telescopic legs. The module is expected to be deployed on the lunar surface in the 2030s and will serve as a hub for scientific research, technology testing, and exploration missions. Thales Alenia Space is also involved in the development of pressurized modules for the Lunar Gateway space station.

Indonesia's SATRIA-1 satellite launched to improve internet connectivity.

Indonesia's Satria-1 broadband satellite, built by Thales Alenia Space, has deployed its solar panels after launching on a SpaceX Falcon 9 to geosynchronous transfer orbit. It will take about five months to reach its 146 degrees East orbital slot via onboard electric propulsion. Once it reaches its geostationary orbital slot late this year, it will provide around 150 gigabits per second of capacity across the thousands of islands in the Indonesian archipelago and surrounding areas by early 2024. The $545 million satellite is operated by PT Satelit Nusantara Tiga under a public-private partnership with the country's government.

SpaceX successfully launches Indonesian communications satellite.

SpaceX is set to launch the SATRIA communications satellite, built by Thales Alenia Space, on a Falcon 9 rocket to provide internet service to rural Indonesia. The satellite will be operated by Satelit Nusantara Tiga, a subsidiary of the Indonesian satellite company PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara, and will provide internet service to rural hospitals, schools, and government buildings, focusing on areas where terrestrial fiber connections are unavailable. The SATRIA project cost nearly $550 million and is the second in a series of PSN satellites to bring improved communications to Indonesia.

The Future of GEO Manufacturing: A Competitive Analysis.

The competition for commercial GEO communications satellites is heating up, with just three contracts announced as of late April. Airbus is hoping to capture as many as six of the 15 or so GEOs expected to be tendered in 2023, while Thales Alenia Space, Maxar, and Boeing are also hungry for more contracts this year. The rise of non-geostationary constellations and the COVID-19 pandemic have caused manufacturers to compete for a smaller pool of contracts for half a decade now. Supply chain issues stemming from the pandemic continue to delay satellite projects, making on-time delivery a key differentiator.
