Researchers have developed a new MRI-based tool called DunedinPACNI that can measure how fast a person is aging and predict their risk of developing dementia and other age-related diseases decades in advance, using just a single brain scan. This innovative approach could enable early interventions and improve health outcomes by identifying at-risk individuals before symptoms appear.

Scientists from the University of Oxford and Harvard Medical School have developed an AI tool called EVEscape that aims to predict virus variants before they emerge. By estimating the likelihood of a variant escaping the body's immunity defenses, the tool processes data on virus evolution and considers biological and structural information. The tool successfully predicted SARS-CoV-2 mutations and identified which antibody-based treatments would lose efficacy. It can examine thousands of new virus variants each week and inform public health decisions. The tool also showed promise in predicting mutating behaviors for other viruses like HIV and the flu.

Scientists have identified 11 risk factors for dementia and developed a tool, called the UK Biobank Dementia Risk Score (UKBDRS), that can predict the likelihood of developing the condition within the next 14 years. The risk factors include age, education, diabetes, depression, stroke history, parental history of dementia, deprivation, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, living alone, and being male. The tool outperforms other risk assessments and can help identify individuals at risk for further assessments and preventive measures. Lifestyle modifications, such as quitting smoking, reducing high blood pressure, losing weight, and reducing alcohol intake, could potentially prevent up to 40% of dementia cases.
