"Exploring Easter Island's Underwater Realms: Unveiling New Marine Species and Mysteries"

An expedition off the coast of Easter Island has revealed an underwater mountain chain teeming with previously unknown deep-sea species, including at least 50 new to science. The researchers discovered a variety of astonishing creatures, such as the deepest photosynthesis-dependent animal ever found, a flying spaghetti monster, and a luminescent deep-sea dragonfish. The expedition documented marine life on the Salas y Gómez Ridge, highlighting the importance of protecting the entire ridge and establishing new marine protected areas.

"Perilous Journey: Determining the Distance to the Sun"

In 1672, French astronomer Jean Richer and his partner embarked on a perilous journey to French Guiana to measure the distance between Earth and the sun. Despite facing illness, harsh weather, and dangerous wildlife, they successfully made key observations that, combined with calculations by astronomer Giovanni Cassini, revealed the sun to be 87 million miles away. This groundbreaking expedition not only determined the solar system's immense scale but also contributed to Isaac Newton's theories of gravity.

Pristine Coral Reef Discovered in Galapagos Islands' Deep Waters

A scientific expedition has discovered a previously unknown coral reef with abundant marine life off Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, the country's environment ministry said. The reef is approximately two kilometers long and 400 meters deep, and has more than 50% living coral. The discovery is significant as many deepwater systems are degraded globally. The Galapagos, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, are also home to giant tortoises, albatrosses, cormorants and other species, some of which are endangered.

"Japan's Scientists Capture Deepest Fish on Film"

A joint Japanese-Australian scientific expedition has caught and filmed fish more than 5 miles (8 kilometres) under the surface of the ocean for the first time ever. The snailfish, of the Pseudoliparis belyaevi species, were caught in traps set 8,022 metres underwater in the Japan Trench, south of Japan, during a two-month voyage by a team from the University of Western Australia and the Tokyo University of Marine Science. The expedition is part of a 10-year study into the deepest fish population on the planet.
