Ecuador hikes Colombia import tariffs to 50%, widening regional trade clash
Ecuador will raise tariffs on Colombian imports from 30% to 50% effective March 1, escalating a bilateral dispute tied to border security and narcotics trafficking. Colombia has retaliated by suspending energy sales, and trade links show Colombia exports about $2.13 billion to Ecuador (4% of its exports) while Ecuador ships around $863 million to Colombia (2.3% of its exports). The move follows an initial 30% tariff in February and comes amid broader tensions over energy, pipelines, and security along their shared border.
