3,400-Year-Old Face of King Tut's Grandmother Reconstructed

A digital artist has reconstructed the face of Queen Tiye, the grandmother of King Tut, using her 3,400-year-old mummified remains. The artist employed Photoshop to add features like eyes, nose, and hair to her preserved bone structure, revealing a lifelike image of the ancient queen. Queen Tiye, the Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, was a significant figure in Egyptian royalty and the mother of Akhenaten, King Tut's father. Her mummy, discovered in 1898, was confirmed to be hers through DNA analysis in 2010.

"500-year-old 'Ice Maiden' emerges from frozen slumber, unveiling her face"

Archaeologists have used 3D scanning techniques and scientific analysis to recreate the face of the "Ice Maiden," a mummified Inca teenager sacrificed and left near the summit of a dormant volcano in the Peruvian Andes about 500 years ago. The well-preserved remains were discovered by archaeologist Dr. Johan Reinhard, and the reconstruction is part of a new exhibit at the Andean Sanctuaries Museum in Peru. In other news, the Lucy mission, designed to study Trojan asteroids, had its first close look at an asteroid and discovered it was actually a pair of space rocks. The critically endangered akikiki bird species native to Hawaii is facing extinction due to global warming, and conservationists are taking measures to protect them. New research suggests that starfish are "just a head crawling along the seafloor," and the James Webb Space Telescope has revealed previously unseen details within the Crab Nebula and captured other intriguing features in the cosmos.

Mummified Mice Found atop Andean Volcanoes: A Puzzling Discovery

Scientists have discovered the mummified remains of 13 mice at the tops of three 20,000ft Andean volcanoes, a location with freezing temperatures and low oxygen levels. Initially, it was thought that the mice were brought up by Incan pilgrims, but a new study suggests that the rodents climbed the volcanoes on their own. DNA analysis confirmed that the mice were the same species found at lower altitudes. The researchers are unsure why the mice climbed the volcanoes, but the findings could provide insights into how animals survive in extreme environments, potentially relevant for future missions to Mars.

"30,000-Year-Old Mummified Squirrel Discovered in Canadian Permafrost"

A miner in the Yukon goldfields discovered a Fur Sphere, a mummified 30,000-year-old arctic ground squirrel that died while hibernating. The squirrel was curled up in a fetal position, suggesting it died while hibernating. The Fur Sphere will be displayed at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Center. Arctic ground squirrels spend seven to eight months of the year hibernating, during which time they adopt the lowest body temperature recorded in any mammal.
