Friday Forecast: Severe Storms and Tornadoes Loom

A level 3 out of 5 risk for severe storms, including the possibility of brief spin-up tornadoes, is forecasted for Friday across north Georgia as another strong weather system moves in from the central US. The severe weather risk will be elevated across the region, with the potential for damaging 60 mph wind gusts. Rainy Weekend Forecast for Western and Central New York

Western New York (WNY) is expected to experience a change in weather with the arrival of a cold front and a weather system bringing widespread rainfall. Rainfall amounts will range from 1/4" to 3/4" across the region on Sunday and Sunday night, with a weaker storm system keeping showers around on Monday. The cool air and low pressure will result in below-normal temperatures for the first half of next week, potentially leading to lake effect rain showers. Scattered showers are also expected on Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Volcano eruption triggers record-breaking lightning storm.

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano in January 2022 set off the most extreme lightning ever recorded on Earth, with concentric rings of lightning flashing about 192,000 times over 11 hours. Lightning shot up to 30 km high, beating even cyclones and supercells. The lightning was created by superfast energetic waves known as gravitational waves, which caused changes in air pressure and brought on enough turbulence to generate lightning. The discovery will make it easier to assess risks to aircraft from lightning and ash clouds that can obscure vision.

Revelations from a Powerful Volcano Eruption

The volcanic eruption near the Tonga archipelago in January 2022 created the most intense lightning storm ever recorded, according to a new study led by volcanologist Alexa Van Eaton. The eruption created its own massive weather system, and at least 2,600 lightning bolts each minute were detected during peak activity, shattering rates from any other weather system, storm or volcanic eruption recorded in Earth’s history. The eruption lasted for 11 hours, several hours longer than previously estimated, and the lightning helped researchers reconstruct the timeline of the event. The insights gained from this study will help researchers better understand future volcanic eruptions as they are happening.

Tonga's Hunga Eruption Sets Lightning Records

The eruption of Tonga's Hunga Volcano in January 2022 produced the most intense lightning storm on record, with an estimated 192,000 flashes of lightning in just 11 hours. The eruption also created the largest explosive eruption of the century, with a plume of ash, water, and gas at least 58 kilometers high. The lightning data revealed four distinct phases in the eruption, which hadn't been previously spotted, and will help future eruption forecasting and modeling. The research used a combination of optical and radio readings to monitor the volcanic plume and lightning storm in real-time.

Canadian Wildfires Cause Air Quality Alert in Northeastern US

An air quality alert continues for the southwestern half of New England and much of the Northeast US due to wildfire smoke from Quebec, Canada. The smoke is being blown southward into the US by a stalled weather system that delivered rain to Nova Scotia. The smoke poses a challenge for those with respiratory ailments and makes a noticeable difference for those who exercise strenuously. The weather system is impacting the sensible weather, resulting in repeated days of building clouds and showers punctuated mostly by slugs of dry air that bring increased periods of sun. Showers are expected to start sooner on Wednesday, with scattered showers coming and going over the course of the day, more clouds than Tuesday, and somewhat cooler temperatures hovering in the 60s.
