Teen's Vocal Cord Mishap: Coin Lodged in Throat Shocks Doctors

A California teen had to be hospitalized after swallowing a quarter, which became lodged sideways in his air passage, causing hoarseness and swallowing problems. Despite the unusual positioning of the coin, doctors were able to remove it with forceps during a bronchoscopy under general anesthesia, and the boy was discharged home with his symptoms abated. This incident highlights the common occurrence of children swallowing coins and the potential risks associated with foreign objects in the airway.

Star Devours Planet in Unprecedented Discovery

Astronomers have observed a star swallowing a gas giant planet, at least the size of Jupiter, for the first time. The star had been puffing up with old age for eons and finally got so big that it engulfed the close-orbiting planet. The event happened between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago near the Aquila constellation. The swallow itself was quite brief, occurring in essentially one fell swoop. The findings are "very plausible," said Carole Haswell, an astrophysicist at Britain's Open University.

Unprecedented Discovery: Star Devours Planet in Deep Space

Astronomers have observed a star swallowing a gas giant planet, the size of Jupiter or bigger, for the first time ever. The star had been expanding for eons and finally got so big that it engulfed the close-orbiting planet. The event happened between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago near the Aquila constellation. The swallow itself was quite brief, occurring in essentially one fell swoop. The researchers suspect thousands of planets around other stars will suffer the same fate as this one did and, eventually, so will our solar system.

Astronomers Witness Star Devouring Planet, Offering Glimpse into Earth's Future.

Astronomers have observed a star swallowing a planet for the first time, providing a glimpse into the future of Earth. The planetary demise took place in our own galaxy, some 12,000 light-years away, near the eagle-like constellation Aquila. The scientists estimate that the planet was likely a hot, Jupiter-sized world that spiraled close, then was pulled into the dying star’s atmosphere, and, finally, into its core. The study’s MIT co-authors include Deepto Chakrabarty, Anna-Christina Eilers, Erin Kara, Robert Simcoe, Richard Teague, and Andrew Vanderburg, along with colleagues from Caltech, the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and multiple other institutions.

Star Devours Planet in Rare Cosmic Event.

Scientists have observed a star swallowing a gas giant planet around the size of Jupiter or bigger, in a first-of-its-kind observation. The star had been expanding for eons and finally engulfed the close-orbiting planet. The event occurred between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago near the Aquila constellation. The swallow itself was brief, occurring in one fell swoop, but the star's lifetime is billions of years. Astronomers suspect thousands of planets around other stars will suffer the same fate, including our solar system.

Star Devours Jupiter-Sized Planet in Historic First Observation

Scientists have observed a star swallowing a gas giant planet around the size of Jupiter or bigger, in a first-of-its-kind observation. The star had been expanding for eons and finally engulfed the close-orbiting planet. The event occurred between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago near the Aquila constellation. The swallow itself was quite brief, occurring in essentially one fell swoop. Astronomers suspect thousands of planets around other stars will suffer the same fate, including our solar system in about 5 billion years when our sun morphs into a red giant and gobbles the four inner planets.
