Google is reportedly planning to enhance its call-screening feature in the Phone app by introducing AI-powered smart replies. This update would allow the app to generate responses based on the caller's interaction, building on existing features like contextual replies and silent call responses. The move aligns with Google's broader strategy to implement multi-step, multi-turn conversational AI, potentially making call screening more effective.
Google is set to introduce on-device AI-powered features like recording summaries and smart replies on the Pixel 8, utilizing the Gemini Nano model for on-device processing. These features will be available in a developer preview with the next Pixel feature drop, expanding beyond the Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24. Google aims to gather feedback and foster innovation by enabling more enthusiasts and developers to experiment with Gemini Nano, marking a shift from primarily cloud-based AI features. Additionally, the "Circle to Search" feature will be extended to more Pixel and Samsung devices, with an update to support instant translation of on-screen content.
New research published in Scientific Reports indicates that people tend to use more positive language and perceive each other more positively when using an AI-based chat tool. However, people tend to evaluate others more negatively if they suspect that AI-generated “smart replies” are being used in the conversation. The study also found that smart replies led to faster communication, with 10.2% more messages sent per minute, and that the availability of negative smart replies caused conversations to have more negative emotional content than conversations with positive smart replies or no smart replies at all.
Cornell University researchers have found that using AI-enabled chat tools in conversations leads to more efficient and positive language use, and more positive perceptions of each other. However, when participants suspect their partner is using AI-suggested responses, they perceive them as less cooperative and feel less affiliation towards them. The study highlights the impact of AI on social dynamics and the unintended consequences that could result from integrating AI in social contexts.
