Growing Data Centers and Rising Costs Threaten U.S. Power Grid Stability

The mid-Atlantic region's power grid faces increased risk of blackouts due to a shortfall in electricity supply, driven by rising demand from data centers, with record-high capacity auction prices and a potential for higher costs and reliability concerns starting in 2027. Efforts are underway to extend price caps and improve supply, but challenges remain in meeting future demand.

Record PJM Auction Prices Signal Rising Utility Costs

PJM's 2027/2028 capacity auction secured 134,479 MW of generation and demand response, with a price at the cap of $333.44/MW-day, but still short of the reliability requirement by 6,623 MW, highlighting ongoing challenges in meeting system demand, especially with increasing data center loads. The auction results reflect market rule changes and efforts to address supply-demand imbalances through faster interconnection processes and new generation projects.

Pennsylvania Considers Exit from PJM Amid Calls for Grid Reforms

Governors from PJM states threaten to leave the regional grid operator unless they are given a greater role in governance, citing concerns over rising capacity prices and the need for reforms to include more state influence, including board representation and FERC filing rights. PJM is open to discussions, but reforms would require approval and could take time, amid opposition from independent power producers.

Rising US Electricity Prices Threaten Political and Economic Stability

Surging utility bills in key US battleground states, driven by record wholesale power costs and increased demand from AI data centers, pose a political challenge for Republicans. The region's reliance on fossil fuels and outdated transmission infrastructure complicates efforts to control prices, with Democrats emphasizing the issue ahead of elections. President Trump's policies aimed at boosting domestic energy production may inadvertently contribute to rising costs, while infrastructure upgrades are seen as a potential solution.

PJM's Hot Weather Operations: July 28 Update

PJM, the regional transmission organization, has extended its Maximum Generation Alert/Load Management Alert and Hot Weather Alert due to the ongoing hot weather conditions. These alerts are issued to prepare generators and transmission facilities for the increased electricity demand caused by intense heat. PJM served a preliminary peak load of around 148,000 MW on July 27 and is forecasting a peak of around 155,000 MW for July 28. The Hot Weather Alert has been extended to July 29 for the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions, where temperatures are expected to be near or above 90 degrees, driving up the demand for electricity.
