Venus Unveils Its Largest Known Lava Tube

A Nature Communications study using NASA’s Magellan radar data finds a giant subsurface lava tube beneath Venus’ Nyx Mons, about 1 kilometer in diameter and potentially extending at least 45 kilometers, providing the strongest direct evidence yet of Venusian lava tubes; confirming the full extent will require higher-resolution radar data.

Venus may conceal a giant underground lava tube

Analysis of NASA's Magellan radar data suggests Venus may host a large underground lava tube on Nyx Mons, potentially stretching tens of kilometers. If confirmed, it would be only the second lava tube found on Venus and would support the view that the planet is geologically active; confirming its full size will require higher-resolution radar from future missions like ESA's EnVision with the Subsurface Radar Sounder.

New Data Suggests Venus Is Geologically Active and Dynamic

NASA's Magellan mission provided new insights into Venus's tectonic processes by studying coronae through gravity and topography data, revealing active subsurface interactions that may have occurred early in Earth's history. These methods will be useful for future Venus missions like VERITAS and EnVision, which will offer higher resolution data to further understand Venus's geology.

ONEOK acquires Magellan Midstream Partners in $19 billion deal to expand pipeline operations.

Oneok has agreed to acquire Magellan Midstream Partners in a cash-and-stock deal worth $18.8 billion, creating one of the largest oil and natural gas pipeline operators in the US. The deal includes $8.8 billion in new equity and the assumption of $5 billion of existing net debt. The acquisition will give Oneok access to a network of crude oil and refined products conduits and terminals sprawling from Texas to Minnesota. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter, subject to shareholders and regulatory approvals.

Venus: A Volcanically Active Planet with Clues to Earth's Habitable Past.

New evidence suggests that Venus is volcanically active, based on radar images captured by NASA's Magellan spacecraft over 30 years ago. The images showed volcanic openings on the surface of Venus that appeared to change shape and size in less than a year, providing the first direct evidence of more recent volcanic activity on the planet. NASA's upcoming VERITAS mission is expected to study Venus from the surface to core in an effort to understand this rocky planet about the same size as Earth.

Recent volcanic activity discovered on Venus by NASA.

Geophysicist Robert Herrick of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, has caught one of Venus's volcanoes in the act, providing the first clear evidence of volcanic activity on the planet. Venus's dense atmosphere makes it difficult to study its surface, but radar images from NASA's Magellan probe have revealed changes on the surface that can only be explained by volcanic activity. Future missions, such as NASA's Veritas and Esa's EnVision, will carry better imaging radar than Magellan and are expected to provide more information about Venus's volcanic activity.
