Cannabis Use and Health Risks: Who's Most Vulnerable?

A study from UCSF indicates that regular cannabis use, whether smoked or ingested, can significantly impair vascular function, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues like heart attack and hypertension. The research highlights potential health risks associated with cannabis, especially as potency and usage among older adults rise, despite some benefits such as pain relief and seizure control. The findings underscore the need for further research into the public health implications of increasing cannabis legalization.

The Dangerous Connection: Cannabis Use and Increased Heart Risk

Two preliminary studies presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2023 suggest that regular marijuana use may increase the risk of heart failure, stroke, and heart attack, even after accounting for other cardiovascular risk factors. The studies found that daily marijuana users had a 34% increased risk of developing heart failure, with coronary artery disease being a likely pathway. Additionally, elderly non-smokers who used cannabis had a 20% increased risk of major adverse cardiac events. These findings highlight the need for further research into the health implications of marijuana and emphasize the importance of healthcare professionals being aware of the cardiovascular risks associated with its use.

Testosterone Therapy Deemed Safe for Men with Heart Disease

A large clinical trial has found that testosterone therapy does not increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and cardiac deaths in men with hypogonadism, a medical condition where the body does not produce enough testosterone. However, the study does not apply to men who take testosterone without a medical diagnosis, and long-term safety data is still lacking. The trial was funded by pharmaceutical companies that make testosterone, at the behest of the Food and Drug Administration.

AstraZeneca's Covid Vaccine Linked to Higher Heart Risk and Death in Young Women.

A new analysis of immunization and death records in Britain suggests that young women who received at least one dose of the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine might have been more likely to die of a heart problem in the 12 weeks after their vaccination. The study found six cardiac-related deaths per 100,000 young women who received at least one dose of the vaccine in Britain. The researchers did not find a significantly elevated risk of death in any other subgroup or with the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine, which was also widely used in Britain. However, the benefits of Covid vaccines still vastly outweigh the risks, and the incidence of harmful events after vaccination remains very low, the researchers and other experts emphasized.
