The article discusses a concerning rise in mortality rates among young Americans aged 25-44, which has persisted even after the COVID-19 pandemic, with experts linking this trend to long-term effects of policy decisions since the Reagan era that have undermined social safety nets, healthcare, and economic stability, disproportionately affecting millennials and contributing to a decline in life expectancy.

A new Lancet study revealed that the global average life expectancy dropped by 1.6 years during the first two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the United States experiencing the highest excess mortality rate among high-wealth nations. Global mortality rates, which had been declining for 70 years, saw a significant increase during the pandemic, leading to a 22% rise in mortality for men over 15 and a 17% rise for women. While global deaths in children declined, the pandemic had a profound impact on adult mortality, with 84% of countries experiencing a decline in life expectancy. The study also highlighted the impact of population changes on global health, including an aging population and potential social, economic, and political challenges.

A study from Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania reveals that a significant portion of excess deaths attributed to natural causes during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US were actually linked to the virus. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that non-COVID-19 excess deaths peaked around the same time as COVID-19 deaths, indicating potential underreporting. The study also identified regional variations in excess natural-cause deaths, with nonmetropolitan and certain geographic areas reporting higher rates.

A new study from Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania provides compelling evidence that many excess mortality cases during the COVID-19 pandemic were actually due to the virus, countering claims attributing these deaths to other factors. The research found that excess deaths from natural causes paralleled reported COVID-19 deaths temporally and geographically, especially in nonmetropolitan areas, highlighting the true impact of the pandemic and the importance of accurate death attribution for public health interventions and future policies. The study estimated 1.2 million excess natural-cause deaths during the first 30 months of the pandemic, with about 163,000 not listed as COVID-19 on death certificates, emphasizing the need for standardized death reporting.

A study led by the Boston University School of Public Health challenges prevailing narratives about excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing evidence that many deaths previously attributed to natural causes were unrecognized fatalities from COVID-19. The investigation, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveals that spikes in non-COVID natural cause deaths coincided with or preceded surges in COVID-19 deaths in most U.S. counties, suggesting that many deaths were misclassified. The study disproves claims that mortality during the pandemic can be attributed to COVID-19 vaccinations or shelter-in-place policies and emphasizes the importance of accurately accounting for COVID-19 deaths.

A new study suggests that many excess deaths attributed to natural causes were actually uncounted COVID-19 deaths, disproving claims that these deaths were caused by factors such as COVID vaccinations or shelter-in-place policies. The study compared reported COVID-19 deaths to excess deaths from non-COVID natural causes and found that increases in non-COVID excess deaths occurred at the same time or before increases in reported COVID-19 deaths in most US counties. This provides concrete data showing that many of these excess deaths were indeed uncounted COVID-19 deaths, persisting well beyond the initial phase of the pandemic.

Independent analysis using excess mortality data suggests that nearly 50,000 Russian men have died in the war in Ukraine, a significantly higher number than the approximately 6,000 deaths publicly acknowledged by Russia. Two independent Russian media outlets, Mediazona and Meduza, along with a data scientist from Germany's Tübingen University, used statistical analysis and inheritance records to estimate the excess deaths of men below the age of 50 between February 2022 and May 2023. The findings align with previous assessments by the US and UK intelligence agencies, highlighting the human cost of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

An independent statistical analysis conducted by Russian media outlets Mediazona and Meduza, along with a data scientist from Germany's Tübingen University, estimates that nearly 50,000 Russian men have died in the war in Ukraine. Using the concept of excess mortality, the analysis relied on Russian government data and inheritance records to estimate the number of additional deaths of men under 50 between February 2022 and May 2023. The analysis reveals a significant discrepancy between the acknowledged death toll of over 6,000 soldiers publicly reported by Russia and the estimated figure. The investigation highlights the challenges of documenting war casualties in Russia, where reporting on military losses is repressed, and those who do so face harassment and potential criminal charges.

Excess deaths decreased in large metropolitan counties and increased in rural counties in the United States during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new study. The study presents the first-ever monthly estimates of excess mortality rates for every US county during the first two years of the pandemic. The researchers created an online database and interactive tool to serve as a resource for people to further examine the social, structural, and policy drivers of excess mortality during the pandemic. The study identifies a total of 1,179,024 excess deaths from March 2020 through February 2022, including an estimated 634,830 excess deaths from March 2020 to February 2021, and 544,194 estimated excess deaths from March 2021 to February 2022.
