14-Year-Old Virginia Student Develops Cancer-Treating Soap, Wins Top Young Scientist Award

Heman Bekele, a 14-year-old student from Virginia, has been crowned America's Top Young Scientist for developing an affordable bar of soap that treats skin cancer. By infusing medicinal soap with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and tretinoin, Bekele created a soap that reactivates dendritic cells, boosting the immune response to combat cancer. Each bar costs just $0.50, compared to the $40,000 needed for current medical treatments. Bekele plans to refine his innovation and create a nonprofit organization to distribute the soap to needy communities.

The Link Between Celebrities and Chronic Illness: Lyme Disease and Psoriasis

A man named Richard Jordan has theorized that the high prevalence of Lyme disease among celebrities may be due to their frequent visits to the Hamptons, where they are more likely to be bitten by deer ticks. Jordan, who has Lyme disease himself, explained that the deer tick, which spreads the disease, is commonly found in the sand dunes of East Hampton. Celebrities like Yolanda and Bella Hadid, Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne, and Ben Stiller, who have all been diagnosed with Lyme disease, may have contracted it during their extended stays in the Hamptons. The theory also suggests that celebrities are more vocal about their diagnosis due to their financial means to seek treatment, highlighting the healthcare disparities faced by regular individuals.

"Key Details on Biden's First 10 Drugs for Medicare Price Negotiations"

The Biden administration has announced the first 10 drugs chosen for Medicare price negotiation, marking a significant step in addressing healthcare affordability. However, the program is facing legal challenges from pharmaceutical companies, potentially delaying implementation. The selected drugs, which include medications for heart disease, diabetes, blood cancers, and autoimmune diseases, account for a significant portion of Medicare Part D-covered prescription drug costs. The negotiations are set to begin, and drugmakers have until October 1 to sign agreements. Despite legal battles, supporters hope that the program will lead to discounted prices and have a broader impact on the pharmaceutical industry.

"Revolutionary Clinic Combats Doctor Burnout and Transforms Healthcare"

Birchwood Family Medicine in Wisconsin is operating on a direct primary care model, offering affordable healthcare and addressing the growing shortage of primary care physicians. Patients pay a monthly membership fee of $80, which includes unlimited clinic visits, 24/7 access to the doctor, and significantly discounted lab tests and imaging. The clinic provides more personalized care and longer appointment times, leading to increased patient satisfaction. However, the rise of small clinics like Birchwood adds stress to an already stretched healthcare system, which is facing retirements of Baby Boom generation physicians and a decline in medical graduates opting for primary care. Attempts to raise primary care reimbursement have been challenging due to rising healthcare costs.

Plant-based oral insulin delivery regulates blood sugar levels similarly to natural insulin with lower hypoglycemia risk.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a plant-based insulin that can be ingested orally and regulates blood sugar levels within 15 minutes of ingestion, similar to naturally secreted insulin. The insulin contains all three peptides that occur in natural insulin and is delivered to the liver via the gut-liver axis. The plant-based delivery system eliminates the need for expensive, complex laboratory equipment and results in a product that is shelf-stable at room temperature. The affordability and global access to healthcare are the foundation for the researchers' work.

Affordable Weight Loss Medications Gain Popularity and Hype.

New research suggests that anti-obesity medications can be produced and sold at much lower prices worldwide than their current high costs. The study calls for a public health approach to obesity management, prioritizing access to medications over pharmaceutical companies’ profits. The authors have called for a public health-based approach to obesity management similar to that used with other diseases. The study’s authors searched national drug price databases and collected information on six medications: orlistat, naltrexone/bupropion, topiramate/phentermine, liraglutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide across a range of 16 low-, middle- and high-income countries. Results revealed that national prices of oral and injectable anti-obesity medications were significantly higher than calculated estimated minimum prices (EMPs).

Affordability concerns arise over FDA approval of over-the-counter Narcan sales.

The FDA has approved Narcan, a brand-name nasal spray manufactured by Emergent BioSolutions, to be sold over-the-counter without a prescription. However, there is concern that the drug may not be affordable for those who need it most. The cost of the medication, requirements to show ID, and the overall stigma of asking for naloxone are all barriers. Health insurance plans don’t typically cover over-the-counter drugs, so there’s a chance FDA’s move could make Narcan more expensive than it already is. The hope is that making Narcan available over-the-counter will eliminate some of the “bureaucratic gatekeeping” that prevents harm reduction groups from purchasing and distributing Narcan.

"Revolutionizing MRI Affordability: Five Key Steps"

Researchers have outlined five key challenges to make magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems more affordable and accessible in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These include improving low-field technologies, building physicians' confidence, prioritizing open-source approaches, developing AI tools for LMIC contexts, and boosting funding for sustainable MRI. The researchers have developed two types of low-field MRI systems that can be optimized to monitor specific conditions such as hydrocephalus. They advocate for the use of open-source hardware and software to empower scientists, clinicians, and medical technologists in LMICs to design, maintain, and build low-cost MRI systems on-site.
