Candida auris, a potentially deadly fungus, has been detected in dozens of states including Ohio, and is listed as an urgent threat by the CDC due to its resistance to most drug treatments. The fungus is difficult to identify with standard lab testing and can spread to the bloodstream and cause death if left untreated. Ohio reported the 10th highest number of cases with 79, and saw 285 cases from 2020-2022. Prevention measures include proper hygiene and cleaning and disinfecting of patient care environments.
