Project Hyperion: Designing a Generation Ship for Interstellar Travel

Project Hyperion is a design competition inviting teams to conceptualize a generation ship capable of sustaining human life for a 250-year journey to a nearby star. The focus is on creating a viable space habitat and social system, rather than propulsion technology. The ship must accommodate 1000 people, simulate Earth-like conditions, and address challenges like privacy, mental health, and social hierarchy. The competition aims to assess the feasibility of interstellar travel using current and near-future technologies.

"Sierra Space's Successful Test: Inflatable Space Habitat Explodes as Planned"

Private space company Sierra Space successfully conducted a stress test on its first full-scale inflatable space habitat, the Large Integrated Flexible Environment (LIFE), by intentionally overpressurizing it until it exploded. The company aims to revolutionize space station construction with inflatable habitats that can be compactly launched and then expanded in orbit, potentially surpassing the volume of the International Space Station with just a few launches. This successful test marks a significant step toward redefining how humans live and work in space.

Transforming an Asteroid into a Space Habitat: A 12-Year Blueprint

A retired Technical Fellow at Rockwell Collins, David W. Jensen, has released a detailed plan in a 65-page paper on how to turn an asteroid into a rotating space habitat. The paper covers asteroid selection, habitat style selection, and mission strategy. Jensen suggests using the Atira asteroid, which is stable in the "Goldilocks zone" of our solar system, and recommends a torus-shaped habitat for artificial gravity. He proposes using self-replicating spider robots and materials from the asteroid itself for construction. The estimated cost of the project is $4.1 billion, and the timeline for completion is estimated at 12 years.

Designing Human Habitation on Mars: A Science Fiction Reality

As NASA plans for long-term human space colonization, establishing safe and well-made human settlements for life off-Earth is one of the agency’s most urgent tasks. Human dwellings on Earth have evolved to thrive by taking advantage of the surrounding environment, but astronauts on Mars have no such advantages. Future settlements will also need to be capable of growth and even generate some commercial value while manufacturing and demonstrating these future technologies.

Airbus Reveals Futuristic Space Station Design.

Airbus has revealed a new concept space habitat called Loop, which features three customizable decks connected via a tunnel surrounded by an integrated greenhouse. The orbital habitat is designed for a four-person crew but could be adjusted to accommodate up to eight spacefarers. It includes a centrifuge deck producing artificial gravity, where inhabitants could receive temporary relief from zero-gravity conditions. The concept space habitat could be ready to fly in the early 2030s after the end of life of the International Space Station.
