"Experts Discover Fractured Skull and Multiple Injuries in Dead New Jersey Whale"

A post-mortem examination of a juvenile male humpback whale that washed ashore in New Jersey revealed numerous blunt force injuries, including a fractured skull and vertebrae, as well as evidence of past entanglement with fishing gear. While the cause of these injuries remains under investigation, there is ongoing controversy surrounding the potential impact of offshore wind power site preparation on whale deaths along the U.S. East Coast, despite scientific agencies stating there is no evidence linking the two. The whale's death marks New Jersey's first of the year, amid a total of 16 large whale deaths on the East Coast in 2024, with some attributed to vessel strikes or entanglement with fishing gear.

"South Fork Wind Farm Powers New York with Atlantic Winds"

New York State has started receiving electricity from the Atlantic Ocean through the completion of the first turbine of the South Fork Wind project, the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the United States. The wind farm, located about 35 miles east of Montauk Point, is still under construction but will eventually have the capacity to produce 132 megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 70,000 homes. The transmission of offshore wind power is a significant step towards New York's goal of transitioning to renewable energy sources, but rising costs and supply chain disruptions have posed challenges for future wind farm projects. The state has solicited new bids for additional wind farms off the coast of Long Island to meet its clean-energy goals.

New England States Collaborate to Boost Offshore Wind Industry

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut have agreed to jointly procure offshore wind power in an effort to counter the challenges facing the US offshore wind industry, including rising costs and canceled contracts. The three states will seek multi-state offshore wind proposals for up to 6,000 megawatts of power, with any two or three states able to select a multi-state proposal and split the power from a single project. This collaboration aims to support the decarbonization of the power sector and boost domestic manufacturing.

"New Jersey Shore to See 4 Proposed Offshore Wind Power Projects, 2 Far Out at Sea"

Four new offshore wind power projects have been proposed off the New Jersey Shore, which would more than double the existing wind farms in the area if approved. Two of the projects would be located far out to sea and would not be visible from the beach. The proposals aim to make New Jersey a leading clean energy development and manufacturing hub. The projects include a joint venture by RWE and National Grid, a bid by Invenergy and energyRE, and a second project by Shell New Energies US and EDF Renewables North America. The exact details of the fourth application have not been disclosed.

Japan and UK strengthen economic and defense ties ahead of G7 summit.

Japanese companies are set to invest more than $22bn in the UK economy, including funding for offshore wind power and other clean energy projects. The investment is seen as a "massive vote of confidence" in the UK economy by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. However, carmakers have expressed concerns about Brexit trade rules, with Stellantis warning it could close some UK factories if trade rules are not tweaked to ease the supply of batteries for electric vehicles. Sunak said the UK is engaged in a dialogue with the EU to address these concerns.
