Scientists have discovered a DNA discrepancy in great white sharks that cannot be explained by migration or known genetic factors, leaving the cause of the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA differences an open scientific mystery.
According to PODS moving company data, San Diego ranks 14th among U.S. cities with the highest move-out rates in 2023. California had the highest concentration of move-outs, with seven cities in the top 20. Austin, Texas, also saw significant move-outs due to affordability issues and tech industry uncertainties. The US is experiencing a "millionaire remix" as cities like Austin, Scottsdale, and West Palm Beach draw in large numbers of millionaires, with Austin's millionaire population more than doubling over the past decade. The Bay Area in California saw an 82% growth in its millionaire population, reaching about 306,000, despite concerns about crime and homelessness in San Francisco. The report by Henley & Partners also noted the impact of immigrant influx and skilled migrant talent on the growing number of millionaires in the US.
Dallas-Fort Worth led all metro areas in population growth in 2023, adding over 152,000 new residents, bringing its population to 8.1 million. Texas counties claimed eight of the top 10 spots for most new residents, with Harris County gaining 53,000 people. The growth is attributed to net migration, changes in births and deaths, and job opportunities brought by company relocations, especially in Collin and Denton counties. The region has emerged as a mecca for financial services companies and jobs, attracting a flood of new residents.
Minnesota's population increased by 0.4% or 23,615 people between July 2022 and July 2023, driven by more typical migration patterns and fewer deaths compared to the previous pandemic-affected years. The state continues to experience low birth rates and elevated deaths due to an aging population, but domestic migration and immigration patterns appear to be stabilizing. Minnesota lost about 4,700 people in 2023, which is a more comfortable pace of loss compared to previous years. Overall, the nation gained 1.6 million people, with Minnesota being one of 42 states that saw population gains.
According to a recent report by the Pew Research Center, the estimated number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. increased slightly to 10.5 million in 2021. However, Texas' population of unauthorized immigrants remained stable at 1.6 million people. While Mexico is still the most common origin country for unauthorized immigrants, the proportion of Mexico-born unauthorized immigrants has dropped significantly since 2017. The study also found that unauthorized immigration from other regions, such as Central America and South and East Asia, has increased. The geographic patterns of unauthorized immigrants have shifted, indicating more work opportunities and resources in other parts of the country.
A study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution reveals new insights into the migration patterns of people living around the Mediterranean Sea during the Iron and Bronze Ages. By conducting genetic sequencing on the remains of 30 individuals from Italy, Tunisia, and Sardinia, researchers found evidence of widespread migration and strong ties between distant populations. The study also identified heterogeneity in Iron Age populations and shifts in ancestry in North Africa and Sardinia during the Bronze Age, suggesting increased migration from Morocco and Iran to Sardinia and Tunisia. The findings highlight the impact of migration on shaping the ancestry of Mediterranean populations during this time period.
