Connecticut Fish and Wildlife officials made a "relatively rare" sighting in the Long Island Sound when they discovered a massive 400-pound stingray, measuring over six feet long and five feet wide. The roughtail stingray, typically found along the Atlantic coast from New England to Florida, is not aggressive and does not frequent nearshore waters. The officials also caught a cobia, a predator usually seen farther south in the Atlantic, but increasingly appearing in northern waters due to climate change. The Long Island Sound Trawl Survey is documenting the impact of climate change on the region.

Anglers in Connecticut are reporting an increase in half-eaten fish, believed to be the result of shark predation. Charter captain Trevor Berwick confirmed that sharks, including brown sharks, sandbar sharks, and tiger sharks, have been taking bites out of reeled fish in the Long Island Sound. The sightings of sharks have become more frequent in recent years, with some clients finding excitement in the close encounters, while others are disappointed by the loss of their intact catch. Divers in Connecticut discovered a 100-year-old experimental submarine, the Defender, that was built by naval architect Simon Lake in the early 1900s. The submarine was equipped with wheels to move along the ocean floor and a door that gave divers the option to exit the vessel underwater. The vessel was abandoned and later scuttled by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1946. The Defender was found more than 150 feet beneath the water's surface by a team of divers led by Richard Simon, who had spent months analyzing sonar and underwater mapping surveys of the bottom of the sound. The ship is protected under the Abandoned Shipwreck Act.

Divers in Connecticut have discovered the wreckage of an experimental submarine, the Defender, that was built in 1907 and later scuttled in Long Island Sound. The 92-foot-long boat was found more than 150 feet beneath the water's surface, off the coast of Old Saybrook. The Defender was originally named the Lake and built by millionaire Simon Lake and his Bridgeport-based Lake Torpedo Boat Company in hopes of winning a U.S. Navy contract. The company lost that competition and Lake then tried refitting the boat for minesweeping, salvage and rescue work, renaming it the Defender.

Commercial divers led by Richard Simon of Shoreline Diving Services discovered the wreckage of the Defender, an early submarine rejected by the U.S. Navy, off Long Island Sound. The vessel was built by Simon Lake, the grandson of one of the founders of Atlantic City, and was repurposed for salvaging treasure from shipwrecks. The Defender was ultimately scuttled in 1946 and its last resting place was speculated to be off Old Saybrook, Connecticut. The recent discovery was made by a volunteer team of divers and inspired Simon to reach out to descendants of Lake.
