Swimmer's Itch Outbreak Hits Connecticut Beaches

The Greenwich Department of Health in Connecticut has confirmed cases of "Swimmer's Itch," also known as cercarial dermatitis, at several beaches in the area. Swimmer's Itch is a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to microscopic parasites released from snails into fresh and salt water. Although not contagious, prolonged contact with affected waters increases the risk of developing the rash. Symptoms include tingling, itching, small pimples, and blisters. Relief measures such as corticosteroid cream, cool compresses, and oatmeal baths can help alleviate the itch. The health department has requested that all Greenwich beaches be posted with warnings, and may consider closing a beach if the problem worsens.
