Moving Hotspot Forms World's Longest Underwater Mountain Chain

A new study reveals that the Ninetyeast Ridge, a massive underwater mountain range in the Indian Ocean, was formed by a moving hotspot, challenging previous beliefs that hotspots remain stationary. Researchers found that the Kerguelen hotspot moved several hundred kilometers within the mantle, creating the ridge as the Indian Plate drifted northward. This discovery, supported by basalt sample analysis, provides new insights into the dynamics of mantle plumes and tectonic plate movements, refining models of Earth's geological history.

"Uncovering the Growing Dinosaur-Era Superstructure in the Pacific Ocean"

A groundbreaking study led by University of Nevada geoscientist Kevin Konrad and an international team of researchers reveals that the Melanesia Border Plateau, a 222,000 square-kilometer underwater landmass, is still growing due to ongoing crust deformation influenced by the rollback of the Pacific plate beneath the Tongan trench. The plateau's rocky bones consist of cooled magma released during the Cretaceous Normal Superchron, and its formation challenges previous notions about large igneous provinces, suggesting they may emerge slowly and silently over time. Understanding this superstructure's formation has important environmental ramifications and provides insights into Earth's climate.

COVID Hotspots: CDC Identifies Surge in Hospitalizations in Top US States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified fifteen counties in the US as Covid-19 hotspots with a high level of hospital admissions. Hospitalizations have been steadily increasing since July, reaching 17,418 in the week beginning August 26. The highest rates of Covid-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 population were reported in Grant County, North Dakota, and various counties in Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, and Montana. While the numbers are not as high as during the peak of the pandemic, the CDC warns of increasing Covid-19 spikes and the potential return of mask recommendations this winter.

"Oklahoma's COVID Hospitalizations Surge During Summer"

COVID-related hospitalizations have surged across the United States, with a 12% increase in the last week. The CDC has identified 17 counties with "medium" hospitalization rates, including Navarro and Freestone counties in Texas, where hospitalizations have tripled in a week. Other areas of concern include parts of Texas, Oregon, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Nebraska, Arizona, and Georgia. The spike in hospitalizations is attributed to the summer surge of COVID-19, which has become a recurring trend in recent years. The CDC no longer tracks infections, making hospitalizations a crucial indicator of the virus's spread. The dominant variant remains the omicron variant, accounting for 99.9% of cases.

India Urges States to Increase COVID-19 Testing and Preparedness Amid Surge

India's federal government has asked states to identify emergency hotspots and ramp up testing for COVID-19 as the country recorded its highest daily case count since September. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has asked states to ramp up genome testing and conduct mock drills in hospitals. Daily new cases have nearly tripled from around 2,000 at the end of March. The prevalence of XBB.1.16, classified as a variant of interest by the World Health Organisation, increased from 21.6% in February to 35.8% in March.
