A deer in Kentucky has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) for the first time ever. The 2 ½-year-old male white-tailed deer was harvested by a hunter in Ballard County. CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer and other species in the deer family and can easily spread through deer populations. Kentucky wildlife officials are working with local and state partners to discuss next steps for detection and mitigation of the disease. The public is encouraged to report sick deer and donate the heads of legally harvested deer for CWD testing.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) are collaborating to address the threat of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer, elk, and moose. BHA is funding 100 multi-season deer tags for hunters who submit samples from their harvested animals for CWD testing, with a chance to win one of these tags. Early detection is crucial as CWD-infected animals often appear healthy until it's too late. The initiative aims to raise awareness and conserve Washington's wildlife populations.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, in collaboration with the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, is offering a special drawing for multi-season deer tags to hunters who submit samples from harvested animals for testing for chronic wasting disease (CWD). The initiative aims to prevent the spread of CWD, a fatal illness affecting deer, elk, and moose. Hunters in Eastern Washington can participate by visiting the WDFW CWD surveillance web page and will have a chance to win one of the 100 multi-season deer tags. CWD has not been found in Washington yet, but its presence in neighboring states and provinces raises concerns about potential impacts on wildlife populations and hunting opportunities.
