Research suggests that electric fans may not effectively cool the body during high heat conditions and could potentially be harmful, especially for vulnerable populations. Fans are more effective at night when outdoor temperatures drop below indoor temperatures, and using water or wet skin with a fan can enhance cooling. The key to staying safe during heat waves is understanding when and how fans can be beneficial, and employing additional cooling strategies.

Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have developed a new glass-like material called Polymer-based Micro-photonic Multi-functional metamaterial (PMMM) that is more transparent, better at keeping out heat, and self-cleaning. This material can be used in windows, roofs, and walls to create bright, glare-free, and privacy-protected indoor spaces while keeping rooms cooler by up to six degrees through radiative cooling.

Scientists from Spain and Germany have discovered a fundamental asymmetry showing that heating is consistently faster than cooling, challenging conventional expectations in thermodynamics. They introduced the concept of "thermal kinematics" to explain this phenomenon, which involves the exchange and redistribution of energy among individual particles within a system. The researchers used optical tweezers to observe and quantify the dynamics of microscopic systems undergoing thermal relaxation, and their findings could have implications for the development of new general theories for the dynamics of Brownian systems driven far from equilibrium.

Teardowns of the PlayStation 5 "Slim" reveal changes to the cooling system, including a move to a quad-panel design and a smaller baseplate with 5 heat pipes. The new version is slightly quieter but generates more noise from the disc drive area. However, the Slim version does not feature an updated processor and still uses the same 6nm Oberon Plus chip as the original PS5. The official launch and broader availability of the Slim console are expected in the coming weeks.

The Central Coast experienced scorching temperatures, with SLO reaching 106 degrees, one of the hottest in the country. Although not an official record, in 1987 SLO hit 108 degrees due to a strong ridge of high pressure. Santa Maria broke the record for the hottest October 6th with a temperature of 101 degrees. Saturday will remain hot, but winds will likely shift earlier as the high-pressure ridge moves east. Cooling is expected on Sunday, with temperatures falling into the 80s, and a cold front arriving on Monday will bring a dramatic drop in temperatures.
