Amazon Rainforest Port Records Lowest Water Level in 121 Years, Disrupting Corn Shipping Amid Brazil's Climate Emergency

The water level at a major river port in Brazil's Amazon rainforest has reached its lowest point in at least 121 years due to a historic drought. The drought has left boats stranded, cut off food and water supplies to remote jungle villages, and is suspected of killing over 100 endangered river dolphins. Some areas of the Amazon have experienced the lowest rain levels since 1980, and the Brazilian government attributes the drought to this year's onset of the climate phenomenon El Nino. The drought is expected to last until at least December.

Ukrainian island community submerged by Russian-occupied dam damage.

The rising water levels in the Kakhovka Reservoir, caused by spring rains and snowmelt, are submerging the islands in the southern part of the reservoir, which is controlled by Russian forces. The last dam downstream in the Kherson region is controlled by Russian forces, and the sluice gates remain closed, causing the water to crest over the top of the dam. The islands' community is left with limited food deliveries and no contact with the outside world, and their homes and gardens are being destroyed. The reservoir is crucial for Ukraine's drinking water and power supply, and the environmental damage caused by the Russian-occupied dam is a cause for concern.

Lake Mead water level exceeds projections.

Lake Mead's water level is defying projections and is almost 3 feet above the projected level, thanks to recent rain and snowpack in the Colorado Rockies. Lake Powell has also risen more than a foot over the last month. However, the Bureau of Reclamation predicts that Lake Mead could drop to 1,036.9 feet by the end of April, just over 9 feet lower than its current level.

California Lakes Overflow After Decades of Drought

Lopez Lake in California has filled to capacity for the first time in 25 years, becoming the third reservoir in San Luis Obispo County to do so this year. The lake's water level has rebounded remarkably, having been less than a quarter full just over three months ago. The change is attributed to recent rainfall, which has helped alleviate drought conditions in the region.
