The rising water levels in the Kakhovka Reservoir, caused by spring rains and snowmelt, are submerging the islands in the southern part of the reservoir, which is controlled by Russian forces. The last dam downstream in the Kherson region is controlled by Russian forces, and the sluice gates remain closed, causing the water to crest over the top of the dam. The islands' community is left with limited food deliveries and no contact with the outside world, and their homes and gardens are being destroyed.
