NASA's Moon Dust Miscalculation: A Physics Error That Lasted Years

UW-Madison engineers discovered a flaw in how rover terrain is tested on Earth, revealing that Earth's gravity affects sand support differently than on the moon, which impacts rover mobility predictions. Their physics-based simulations, using open-source software Chrono, improve understanding of extraterrestrial surface traversal, benefiting space missions and Earth applications alike.

"Mastering Gravel Riding: Tips, Gear, and Tire Guide"

Teravail offers a range of gravel tires designed for different riding styles and terrains. Riders should first define their riding style and priorities, such as speed, comfort, or versatility. Different terrains require different tire characteristics, with smoother center treads for pavement, wider tires with aggressive tread patterns for rough trails, and beefed-up tires with rigid sidewalls for rocky or muddy terrain. Key considerations when choosing a tire are tread, width, and construction. Teravail offers a selection of tires, including the Rampart for road and light gravel, the Washburn for mixed terrain, the Cannonball for all-around gravel, the Sparwood for spring gravel and mud, and the Rutland for challenging terrain.

Ukraine's Counteroffensive: Overcoming Miles of Obstacles

Ukraine's counteroffensive in southern Ukraine is progressing slowly due to various factors, including the competent defensive tactics of Russian forces, the challenging terrain, and the extensive fortifications constructed by Russia. The flat, open fields provide little concealment for advancing Ukrainian troops and their armored vehicles, which must navigate heavily mined routes. Tree lines offer natural defensive points for Russian forces, concealing tanks and infantry units. Reinforced trenches protect Russian troops from artillery fire but can be easily flanked. Urban areas, including small villages and towns, present additional obstacles with observation points, choke points, and booby-trapped buildings. While Ukraine has retaken some villages, it remains uncertain if they can breach Russian defenses around larger settlements. The counteroffensive is expected to continue for several more weeks or months, with Ukrainian forces still holding reserves.

Slippery Science Meets Boulder on Mars - NASA Exploration

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity's right middle wheel was perched on a rock, making it unsafe to do the arm activities and contact science planned. The team pivoted to taking more imaging and continued to push through the difficult terrain. The rover took a lot of imaging, including atmospheric observations, and ChemCam made a LIBS observation of the rock "Cerro Bravo." The team also planned additional targeted science and drove through challenging terrain. Mastcam monitored dust accumulation on the rover deck and made a solar tau observation to look at the sun and the dust in the atmosphere.
