Minneapolis Rideshare Pay Ordinance Sparks Showdown with Uber and Lyft

Uber and Lyft are threatening to leave Minneapolis in response to a city ordinance mandating a minimum wage for drivers, with both companies planning to cease operations in the Twin Cities area on May 1 if changes are not made. The ride-share companies argue that the city council's mandate disrupts a state process and are calling for a statewide minimum earnings standard that balances the needs of all stakeholders. Similar threats have been made in other cities over regulations, but operations have continued after initial pushback.

Hertz's EV Misstep: Selling 20,000 Electric Vehicles for Gas Cars

Hertz is selling 20,000 of its EVs and replacing them with fossil fuel–powered vehicles after facing unexpected challenges with the rollout for ride-share drivers, particularly related to higher-than-expected repair costs for collision damage. The company's initial push into the EV market, primarily targeting Uber drivers, was met with lower maintenance costs but higher repair expenses, especially for Teslas. This move serves as a cautionary tale for businesses entering new markets and highlights the importance of thoroughly assessing and introducing new products to customers.

The additional four SAR satellites for South Korea are being developed by Thales Alenia Space, Aerospace Industries, and Hanwha Systems Corporation. The launch comes after North Korea claimed to have successfully launched its own spy satellite, which was condemned by several nations.

Lyft considers cutting Citi Bikes and scooters to reduce costs

Lyft is reportedly considering selling or finding an investor for its fleet of 68,000 Citi Bikes and scooters as part of a cost-cutting shakeup led by CEO David Risher. The maintenance costs of the fleet are seen as a distraction from Lyft's core ride-share business. The company has received strong interest in its bikes and scooters business, which contributed to $4.1 billion in revenue in 2022. Risher has been focused on closing the gap with rival Uber and has already implemented severe cost-cutting measures, including laying off over 1,000 employees. Lyft will release its second-quarter earnings on August 8.
