"US Witnesses North Korea's Failed Satellite Launch Up Close"

The US Air Force's RC-135S Cobra Ball reconnaissance plane was strategically positioned to gather data on North Korea's failed satellite launch, which ended in a midair explosion. The mission, part of a broader effort to monitor Pyongyang's missile activities, involved real-time data sharing with Japan and South Korea. North Korea blamed the failure on a new engine and vowed to continue its satellite program, while condemning US reconnaissance activities as espionage.

"Unfulfilled Mission: The Manned Orbiting Laboratory Project"

The Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) was a top-secret US program in the 1960s aimed at sending a crewed spy satellite to space to obtain high-resolution photographic imagery of US adversaries like the Soviet Union. Prompted by the need for rapid and reliable intelligence during the Cold War and the Vietnam War, the program aimed to marry the capabilities of spy planes and photo reconnaissance satellites by operating a crewed spy satellite in space. Although the program never made it to space, it was intended to provide real-time intelligence gathering and circumvent limitations faced by traditional satellites.

Ukraine makes gains in counteroffensive against Russian forces.

Russian forces are conducting reconnaissance efforts to gather data for future missile attacks on Ukraine, according to the spokesperson for Operational Command South. The Russians are using uncrewed "scouts" to collect data, including searching for targets in the rear. The Russians are particularly interested in the Ochakiv direction and the axis along the right bank of the Dnipro. Ukrainian forces are working covertly to surprise the enemy and have had recent successes in taking down Russian invaders, artillery units, and boats. Four Russian ships, including a Kalibr cruise missile carrier, are currently on combat duty in the Black Sea.

Ukrainian Army Suffers Heavy Losses in Probing Russian Lines.

The Ukrainian army is conducting reconnaissance operations in the Zaporizhzhia sector, which could be a prelude to a major counteroffensive. However, recent probes have resulted in heavy losses for the Ukrainians, highlighting the dangers of shifting from defense to offense. The reconnaissance-in-force by the 128th Mountain Brigade and nearby territorial brigades ran into devastating Russian fire, leaving behind at least four ex-Dutch YPR-765 tracked armored personnel carriers. To avoid such losses, the Ukrainian army needs to reinforce its southern brigades and deploy more artillery.
