Eaton's Strong Q3 Performance Earns Praise from Jim Cramer and Wall Street

Power management company Eaton has reported strong fiscal results, surpassing analysts' estimates for quarterly profits due to high demand for its electrical components and equipment. The company's success reflects its ability to adapt to the industry's shift towards renewable energy. Eaton's CEO, Craig Arnold, announced plans to invest over $1 billion in capital to support further growth. Shares of Eaton rose over 3% following the announcement. CNBC's Jim Cramer also praised peer company Caterpillar for its positive outlook, citing increased government infrastructure spending as a key driver for future success.

DR-DOS Power Management Source Code Rediscovered in Patent.

A missing DR-DOS power management source code has been found in a patent. DR-DOS 6.0 has a built-in feature for putting the CPU in power-saving mode when idle, but it required a customized IDLE driver for each hardware platform to enable power management. No manufacturer ever bothered to develop one, leaving users with no option but to write a driver themselves. A U.S. patent includes dozens of pages of well-documented but poorly-scanned x86 assembly code, including source code for a basic IDLE86.SYS driver, which can be used to create a working IDLE driver.

Voyager spacecraft continue to defy age with NASA hack.

NASA's Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft, launched in 1977, are still running and exploring interstellar space. The spacecraft have experienced glitches due to their age, but engineers have been able to fix them. The spacecraft have limited power, so the team has to prioritize which instruments and systems stay powered on. By using backup power, the team can keep a science instrument on Voyager 2 running until 2026. The mission could continue running for years ahead, exploring the farthest reaches of the solar system.

Optimize Your GeForce GPU with Unofficial Third-Party Tool.

A third-party power management tool called NVIDIA GPU Power Management allows users to fine-tune power and memory settings for GeForce GPUs in individual applications. The tool, created by developer Simon Macer, offers features such as power limit profile management and adaptive VRAM clock control. While the tool appears to be safe, users should exercise caution when downloading third-party software and consider backing up their system before installation.

Linux improves GPU performance and stops randomization.

The upcoming Linux 6.4 cycle will include DMA-BUF/DMA-FENCE deadline awareness code in the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) subsystem. This code provides a "deadline" hint for use by the DRM graphics/display drivers, allowing for real-time deadlines like vblanks to be communicated to the fence signaler for enhancing power/frequency management decisions. The hope is that with these deadline hints, GPUs will boost their clock frequency/power state if needed to not miss deadlines. Patches have already been floated for implementing the deadline hint handling within the likes of the Intel and Freedreno drivers.
