Food Allergies Disproportionately Affect People of Color, Study Shows

People of color and those in lower income brackets seem to be disproportionately affected by food allergies, compared with people who are White and at higher incomes, a new study finds. The study found that Asian, Black and Hispanic people were much more likely to report having food allergies than White people. The study cannot determine why more people of color have food allergies, but it’s probably not an issue of genetics. Regardless of the reason, doctors should be aware that people of color are more likely to have food allergies and should screen for them.

The Importance of Sunscreen for Black People, According to Dermatologists.

People with darker skin complexions are at a lower risk of developing skin cancer due to sun exposure, but the risk is not zero. Many dermatologists say that Americans with darker complexions still face a real risk from the sun, including a higher risk of death if they do get melanoma. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that people with darker complexions use tinted mineral sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Melanoma tends to be deadlier for Black people, who often are diagnosed at later stages. SVB had opened its doors to such entrepreneurs, offering opportunities to form crucial relationships in the technology and financial communities that had been out of reach within larger financial institutions. But smaller players have fewer means of surviving a collapse, reflecting the perilous journey minority entrepreneurs face while attempting to navigate industries historically rife with racism.
