Parachute Mishap Mars OSIRIS-REx Mission
NASA has revealed that the drogue parachute on the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule failed to deploy properly due to a design error caused by inconsistent wiring label definitions. The drogue parachute was supposed to deploy at an altitude of about 30.5 kilometers but was cut free while still packed inside. However, the main parachute deployed successfully, resulting in a safe landing. The issue was linked to an inconsistent definition of the term "main" in the system's documentation. Despite the parachute deployment error, the OSIRIS-REx capsule landed safely and protected its payload of material collected from the asteroid Bennu.
