NASA's Eventful Week: Asteroid Sample Capsule Returns, Record-breaking Space Journey, and Artemis II Mission Update

This week at NASA, the sample return capsule from the OSIRIS-REx mission landed on Earth, marking the successful completion of NASA's first asteroid sample return mission. NASA astronaut Frank Rubio returned to Earth after spending a record-setting 371 days in space. Progress was made on the Artemis II mission, with all four RS-25 engines installed onto the core stage of the Moon rocket. Additionally, an annular solar eclipse is set to occur on October 14, crossing the U.S. from Oregon to Texas.

"Utah Desert Welcomes Historic Asteroid Sample Return, Unveiling Ancient Solar System Secrets"

NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission successfully returned a capsule carrying rock samples from the asteroid Bennu, marking the first U.S. asteroid sample-return mission. The samples, expected to be around 8.8 ounces, could provide molecular clues about the history of the solar system and the origin of life on Earth. Bennu, a carbon-rich asteroid, is believed to be a remnant of the early solar system and its rocks carry a record of the forces and processes that shaped Earth. The mission's success opens the door for further exploration and study of asteroids.

China tests asteroid sample return mission with parachutes.

China's Academy of Aerospace Solid Propulsion Technology has successfully conducted high-altitude parachute deployment tests for the Tianwen-2 asteroid sample return and comet rendezvous mission, scheduled to launch in May 2025. The mission will target the near-Earth asteroid 469219 Kamoʻoalewa, and the parachute will be used to slow the descent of a return capsule carrying a sample container after reentering the Earth’s atmosphere. China is also working on an unprecedented Mars sample return mission and planning an asteroid deflection test for 2025.
