The Normalization of the Far Right: Urgent Action Required by Mainstream Parties

Geert Wilders' far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) has topped the polls in the Netherlands' recent election, winning 37 out of 150 seats in parliament. This marks the normalisation of far-right politics in Europe, as mainstream parties compete by adopting similar anti-immigration and populist messages. The centre-right VVD party's willingness to potentially form a coalition with the PVV and their focus on immigration in their campaign contributed to Wilders' success. Mainstream parties must resist the far right's anti-liberal framing and uphold liberal democratic norms.

Tunisia Considers Criminalizing Ties with Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

The Tunisian parliament is debating a bill that would criminalize any normalization of ties with Israel, defining it as "high treason." The proposed legislation would impose prison sentences, fines, and bans on interactions between Tunisians and Israelis. The bill has gained widespread support in parliament and among the public, reflecting President Kais Saied's strong advocacy for the Palestinian cause. Tunisia has a small Jewish community, and recent incidents of violence targeting Jewish sites have occurred amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

West Bank Violence Complicates Saudi-Israeli Normalization, US Warns

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the ongoing violence in the occupied West Bank, particularly the attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians, is making it extremely difficult to make progress on normalizing relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Blinken emphasized that it is not in Israel's interest for this violence to continue, as it hinders the pursuit of normalization agreements and has practical consequences. Despite efforts by the US to foster normalization, a breakthrough between Saudi Arabia and Israel has not yet been achieved.

Saudi Crown Prince seeks exceptional normalization with Israel amidst US-Saudi tensions.

Reports of Saudi Arabia and Israel establishing official relations have been downplayed by US and Israeli officials, with Saudi demands for security guarantees, help in developing a civilian nuclear programme, and fewer restrictions on arms sales seen as major obstacles. While the Biden administration is looking to patch up ties with Riyadh, members of the president’s own party want to curtail the relationship over human rights concerns. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is pursuing a foreign policy that is more independent from Washington and wants something outstanding to normalise ties.

Assad's attendance at Arab League summit raises eyebrows.

Syria's return to the Arab League after a 12-year hiatus has been attributed to a variety of factors, including the country's role as the world's largest producer of Captagon, an addictive amphetamine-type stimulant pill. While President Bashar al-Assad denies any organised efforts by his government to profit from the drug, observers say he has turned Syria into a narco-state, making billions of dollars every year from a business that is believed to be worth several times that of the entirety of operations run by the infamous cartels in Mexico. Arab states have little leverage over Assad, who is unlikely to give up Captagon, but they hope that those regime elements involved in the Captagon trade might divert some of it to markets outside the Arab world to reduce the flow of the drug to Arab countries.

Syria readmitted to Arab League as relations with Assad improve.

The Arab League has readmitted Syria after more than a decade of suspension, allowing it to resume its participation in Arab League meetings immediately. However, some Arab states have been keen to set conditions for Syria's return, with a ministerial contact group formed to liaise with the Syrian government and seek "step-by-step" solutions to the crisis. Syria's membership of the Arab League was suspended in 2011 after a crackdown on street protests against President Bashar al-Assad that led to a devastating civil war, and many Arab states pulled their envoys out of Damascus.

Syria readmitted to Arab League after 11-year absence.

The Arab League has reinstated Syria's membership after more than a decade of suspension due to the country's civil war. The decision was made ahead of the Arab League Summit in Saudi Arabia on May 19 and follows a recent flurry of regional normalisation of ties with Damascus. While some Arab states have been looking to normalise ties, the US has said it will not change its policy towards the Syrian government, deeming it a "rogue" state.

Kosovo and Serbia leaders meet in Brussels for normalization talks.

The leaders of Serbia and Kosovo have resumed talks in Brussels to normalise ties and implement an EU 11-point normalisation plan. The EU proposal covers the normalisation of relations between the two countries and their future path towards peace and EU membership. A sticking point has been Belgrade’s insistence that Pristina implement a 2013 agreement to establish an association of northern Kosovo municipalities with Serb-majority populations. Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, which Serbia does not recognise.

The EU's chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, has called for both parties to avoid escalations and respect their obligations.

Serbia and Kosovo take steps towards normalization, but no agreement signed.

Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic has stated that Serbia wants normal relations with Kosovo but will not sign any international legally binding documents with Kosovo because Serbia does not recognise its independence. Serbia wants to join the European Union, and a condition of membership is that it normalise relations with ethnic Albanian-majority Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008 but which Belgrade still considers a Serbian province.
