Moderna's Updated COVID Vaccine Proven Effective Against New Variant

Moderna announced that its updated COVID-19 vaccine is likely to be effective against the highly-mutated BA.2.86 subvariant of the coronavirus. Clinical trial data showed that the vaccine generated an 8.7-fold increase in neutralizing antibodies against BA.2.86. This variant has raised concerns due to its potential to cause infections in individuals previously infected or vaccinated. Moderna has shared the findings with regulators and submitted them for peer review publication. The retooled vaccine is expected to be available later this month or in early October.

New technique determines effectiveness of COVID-19 antibodies.

MIT chemists have developed a new way to identify neutralizing antibodies in a blood sample by analyzing how antibodies interact with sugar molecules found on the surface of a viral protein. The technique could help reveal whether someone has neutralizing antibodies against viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and determine how well current vaccines might protect against emerging variants of the virus. The researchers created a panel of commercially available lectins, which bind to the sugar molecule at the very end of a sugar chain as it dangles from a protein, and used them to create a distinctive "fingerprint" for each antibody.

"New Vaccines and Inhibitors Show Promise Against Omicron Variants"

A novel vaccine candidate known as CF501/RBD-Fc has been found to neutralize SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariants BQ.1.1 and XBB in a rhesus macaque animal model. The vaccine comprised the human immunoglobulin G (hIgG) fraction, crystallizable (Fc)-conjugated receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 ancestral WA1 strain, in combination with a novel stimulator of interferon genes (STING) agonist-based adjuvant called CF501. The study findings confirm that CF501/RBD-Fc induced highly potent and persistent broad-neutralizing antibody (bnAb) responses against several SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Omicron subvariants.
