Revolutionary Wearable Ultrasound Device Enhances Exercise Diagnosis and Rehabilitation

A bioengineer from George Mason University has developed a wearable ultrasound system that can provide real-time information on muscle tissues during exercise, helping to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries. The device uses ultrasonic monitoring through a skin patch and can detect if a twinge or tweak during physical rehab is a muscular or skeletal injury. It offers insights into muscle function during dynamic physical activity, ensuring correct muscle activation during rehabilitation exercises and providing athletes with insights into their physical fitness and performance. The device is designed to be portable, miniaturized, and powered by batteries, making it convenient for patients.

Understanding Statins: Managing Muscle Pain and Fatigue in Cholesterol Patients.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that statin therapy does not worsen muscle injury, pain, or fatigue in individuals participating in moderate-intensity exercise, such as walking. The findings are reassuring for people who experience muscle pain or fatigue from statins but need to engage in physical activity to keep their cholesterol levels low and their hearts healthy. Statins have long been the gold standard for lowering LDL or “bad” cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD) events.

Study Shows Statins and Exercise Don't Worsen Muscle Symptoms

A new study suggests that statins won't worsen the toll that sustained, moderately intensive exercise already takes on patients' muscles. Statin therapy in this prospective, controlled study wasn't seen to aggravate normal muscle fatigue or pain from sustained exercise or adversely affect enzymes or other biomarkers associated with muscle injury. The findings come from 100 individuals, of whom about two thirds were on statins, participating in a public, 4-day, long-distance walking event held annually in the Netherlands.
