The Migration Superpower of Monarch Butterfly's Spots
Monarch butterflies with more white spots on their wings have a better chance of successfully migrating from Canada and the northern United States to Mexico, according to a study by researchers from the University of Georgia. The spots may alter air flow patterns around the wings, improving flight efficiency. Monarchs may have evolved to have more white spots as a way of taking in more solar energy on their long flight. The study is published in the journal PLOS ONE.
