"Study Shows 26,000 Increase in Self-Managed Abortions Post-Dobbs Decision"
A study published in JAMA found that self-managed abortions increased by over 26,000 in the six months following the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, which overturned the federal right to abortion. The study also revealed a surge in online orders of abortion pills, indicating that people in states with strict abortion bans have found ways to terminate pregnancies outside of formal healthcare settings. The upcoming Supreme Court case over the federal approval of mifepristone, one of the drugs used for medication abortions, could further impact access to abortion pills. Additionally, telehealth abortions have increased post-Dobbs, addressing unmet needs in states with abortion bans, while a report by the Guttmacher Institute showed that 63% of all clinician-provided abortions in the U.S. last year were medication abortions.
