Congress Urged to Scrutinize Wall Street's AI Use.

Rep. Maxine Waters is urging the House Financial Services Committee to hold a hearing on the implications of big tech's foray into artificial intelligence (AI) for the housing and financial services industry. Waters warns that if AI’s growth is not monitored closely, it could inflict large-scale societal and economic harm, including the potential for exposing consumers’ data, creating inaccurate financial assessments, and spreading misinformation, posing risks to financial stability. Waters spearheaded a task force last congress on financial technologies and AI, which raised ethical and legal concerns about bias and discrimination by algorithms.

The Durham Report Exposes Flaws in Russiagate Narrative.

The release of the Durham report contradicts Rep. Maxine Waters' guarantee that President Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. The report concluded that the investigation into the Trump campaign's connection with Russia was premised on "raw, unanalyzed and uncorroborated intelligence" and had no "actual evidence of collusion" to justify its launch. Waters emerged as an early proponent of the Russia collusion theory and introduced legislation to investigate Trump over collusion claims less than a month after his inauguration.

Maxine Waters speaks out on Silicon Valley Bank failure and regulation.

Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, plans to return the $2,500 campaign contribution she received from Silicon Valley Bank's political action committee in late 2020. The decision comes after federal investigators reportedly opened a probe into the largest bank failure since 2008. Waters opposed the 2018 bill that loosened up regulations of banks like SVB, which has come under renewed scrutiny since the California-based bank's collapse. Silicon Valley Bank's PAC gave more than $50,000 to the campaigns of nearly two dozen senators and representatives between 2017 and 2022, largely to members who served on relevant committees.
