Photographer captures stunning red lightning bolts reaching the edge of space

A photographer in Puerto Rico captured rare "gigantic jets" of lightning, which contain 50 times more energy than typical lightning bolts. These bolts, known as upward lightning, occur only about 1,000 times a year worldwide and are believed to happen most often during thunderstorms over the open ocean. The photographer documented three of these rare lightning events while tracking the early formation of Hurricane Franklin. Gigantic jets gain their crimson hue from contact with Earth's ionosphere, and they are related to the electrical phenomenon of red sprites.

Multiple Tropical Disturbances Expected to Form in the Atlantic

Tropical Depression 12 has formed in the Atlantic and is expected to become a tropical storm before dissipating. A tropical wave off the west coast of Africa may develop next week with a 50% chance of development. Tropical Storm Jose is predicted to be absorbed by Hurricane Franklin, which will become an extratropical cyclone. Bermuda is under a tropical storm warning as post-tropical cyclone Idalia moves over the west Atlantic. The remnants of Gert have strengthened into a tropical depression and could become a tropical storm.

Rare 'Gigantic Jets' of Upside-Down Lightning Captured in Atlantic Hurricane

Photographer Frankie Lucena captured rare "gigantic jets" of upside-down lightning shooting upward out of a storm cloud during Hurricane Franklin. These upward-moving lightning bolts, which occur as few as 1,000 times a year, can climb more than 50 miles above Earth's surface. While scientists have known about the phenomenon for about 20 years, much about it remains a mystery. The bolts may be the result of a blockage preventing lightning from escaping through the bottom of the cloud. Atlantic hurricane season has just begun, providing more opportunities to observe and study these rare lightning events.

Tropical Storm Jose Joins Atlantic's Growing System Cluster

Tropical Storm Jose has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the third named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season. With maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, Jose is expected to be absorbed by Hurricane Franklin by the weekend through a phenomenon called the Fujiwhara effect, where two storms orbit around a shared center point. Franklin, the stronger storm, will absorb Jose, resulting in its demise. This comes as Hurricane Idalia battered the Carolina coast and another storm, Idalia, made landfall in Florida's Gulf Coast.

Multiple Tropical Systems Threaten Atlantic, Including Jose and Franklin

Tropical Storm Idalia is losing strength after causing heavy rainfall and flooding in North Carolina. Meanwhile, Hurricane Franklin is moving away from Bermuda, bringing dangerous surf and rip currents to the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States. Tropical Storm Jose has formed southeast of Franklin and is expected to be absorbed by it. The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring a tropical wave off the coast of Africa and the remnants of Hurricane Gert. Idalia is forecasted to become a post-tropical cyclone, while Franklin is expected to weaken and become an extratropical cyclone.

"Franklin's Category 4 Fury Threatens Eastern Seaboard"

Hurricane Franklin remains a formidable Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 140 mph. While it is not expected to make landfall in the US, it poses a threat to the Eastern Seaboard and Bermuda. The storm is forecasted to pass west of Bermuda on Wednesday, causing life-threatening surf and rip currents along the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. Swells and dangerous surf will impact Bermuda and the southeastern US, spreading north along the US coast and Atlantic Canada. Although the storm will gradually weaken, big swells are expected to linger through the Labor Day weekend, potentially causing beach erosion.

"Hurricane Franklin: From High Surf to Dangerous Rip Currents"

Hurricane Franklin is expected to become a major hurricane on Monday as it strengthens in the Bermuda Triangle. While it will remain well off the U.S. East Coast, it will generate high surf and rip currents, posing a threat to beachgoers. There is also a possibility that Franklin could track close to Bermuda, potentially bringing stronger winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding to the archipelago. Interests in Bermuda should closely monitor the forecast and be prepared.
