Pablo Escobar's Hippos Pose Growing Threat in Colombia
Descendants of hippos illegally imported to Colombia by Pablo Escobar in the 1980s have multiplied and started attacking people, posing a threat to the ecosystem. The Colombian government has initiated a plan to control the population, including sterilization, transfer to other countries, and possibly euthanasia. The hippos, which originated from Escobar's private zoo, have no natural predators in Colombia and have become an invasive species. The government estimates there are 169 hippos in Colombia, with the potential to reach 1,000 by 2035 if no action is taken.
