"Virgin Atlantic pioneers first transatlantic flight powered by 100% sustainable fuel"

Virgin Atlantic is set to make history with the first transatlantic flight powered solely by sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The flight, supported by government funding, aims to demonstrate the feasibility of greener flying. The Boeing 787 will be filled with 50 tonnes of SAF, derived from waste fats and corn production waste. While SAF can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 70%, the industry still faces challenges in scaling up production and reducing costs. Experts emphasize the need for continued research into net-zero technologies, such as e-fuels and hydrogen, to achieve long-term emissions reduction in aviation.

"EU's Adoption of Green Fuels for Aviation Set to Send Air Fares Soaring"

The European Union has approved new rules requiring airlines to use at least 2% sustainable jet fuel by 2025, increasing to 70% by 2050 as part of its efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, less than 0.05% of Europe's aviation fuel is sustainable. However, the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is expected to significantly increase airfares due to the higher cost of SAF compared to conventional jet fuel. The move also improves the outlook for synthetic fuels, which are seen as vital in decarbonizing the transport and industry sectors by 2050. Synthetic fuels can be manufactured using captured carbon dioxide or biomass and are compatible with existing fossil fuel engines.

Harnessing the Power of Kites to Reduce Shipping Emissions

French company Airseas has developed Seawing, a kite-like device that can be attached to cargo ships to reduce fuel consumption and cut carbon emissions by 20%. The 1,000-square-meter kite flies 300 meters above the water and is controlled by an automated system. The wing flies in a figure eight pattern, multiplying its pulling power, and harnesses wind that is 50% more powerful at that height. The technology can be retrofitted to existing ships and has received funding from the EU. Airseas hopes to have the technology fully operational by the end of 2025.

"Revolutionary Plan to Convert Wind Energy into Gasoline for Greener Cars"

HIF Global is planning to build a $6 billion plant in Texas that will produce 200 million gallons of greener fuels a year, equivalent to taking the emissions of 400,000 cars off the road. The plant will use wind power to run electrolyzer machines, which separate the hydrogen out of water. The hydrogen is then joined with recycled carbon dioxide, in reactions that generate synthetic hydrocarbons — indistinguishable from fossil-derived gasoline. Porsche AG and Baker Hughes are among the investors in the project. The company is also working on a plant in Tasmania and plans to build more plants in Patagonia as it builds out wind turbines.
