"EU's Adoption of Green Fuels for Aviation Set to Send Air Fares Soaring"

The European Union has approved new rules requiring airlines to use at least 2% sustainable jet fuel by 2025, increasing to 70% by 2050 as part of its efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, less than 0.05% of Europe's aviation fuel is sustainable. However, the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is expected to significantly increase airfares due to the higher cost of SAF compared to conventional jet fuel. The move also improves the outlook for synthetic fuels, which are seen as vital in decarbonizing the transport and industry sectors by 2050. Synthetic fuels can be manufactured using captured carbon dioxide or biomass and are compatible with existing fossil fuel engines.
